This is one of the best professional developments I have ever been to, hands-down. I am so grateful. This series is giving me hope in this difficult time.

The Teach the Black Freedom Struggle classes offer the chance to learn directly from leading historians and to meet peers from across the country. We hold the classes at least once a month at 7:00 pm ET. In each session, a teacher interviews the historian and breakout rooms allow participants in small groups to meet each other, discuss the content, and share teaching ideas. Professional development certificates and ASL are provided. Some school districts include the series in their in-service schedule. Encourage your district to do the same!

Our December speaker is Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative.

See You in Philadelphia

NCSS-2017-650x364 image

The Zinn Education Project team will be at the National Council for the Social Studies Conference in Philadelphia from December 2–4, 2022.

Stop by our exhibit booth to learn about our campaigns, Teaching for Black Lives study groups, the Howard Zinn Centennial, and more. We are raffling people’s history books with dozens of chances to win. Attend our people’s history workshops on Reconstruction, the Black Panther Party, redlining, and resistance to enslavement.

Let us know if you plan to attend. We’d love to meet up with you there.

Historians on Call

Historians for Peace and Democracy (H-PAD) is mobilizing its members “to oppose the right-wing’s lies and distortions about what is and what is not being taught in schools and to stand up for educational freedom.”

Toward that end, they have created a network called “Historians on Call.” We at the Zinn Education Project are collaborating with them to identify when and where the historians can support local efforts.

To date, more than 40 historians have signed up. Their first action was to assist with an analysis and a public critique of Virginia Gov. Youngkin’s proposed social studies standards.

If you work in a district that can use the voice or expertise of a historian to defend the teaching of people’s history, let us know. If you are a professional historian, we invite you to join Historians on Call.
