Greetings!
Empire of the Cyclops Con is just a week out! And we've got a lot of information to get you primed for the con. It starts with information on the Artist's Alley and Dealer's Hall, and then moves through the Save Xcrawl Tournament, the charity auction, and a preview of the In-Con Experience.

New in our online store this week we have a pair of third party releases that are perfect for more experienced characters, and we also remind you about our PDF Horror selection to get your adventure ready for this Halloween weekend. Oh, and next week will see the release of Mutant High School for MCC RPG, exclusively for Empire of the Cyclops Con!

And while one of the third-party Kickstarters is coming to a close very soon, another one has joined the fray! Be sure to back Tales From the Smoking Wyrm before it disappears, and jump in on the Impact Dice Kickstarter right at the beginning!

To round out the week we look back on The Day of Might, point you towards the latest episode of Feeding the Cyclops, share articles on Roger Zelazny, David Drake, and H.P. Lovecraft, and give you the chance to support Haven Goodman's cub scout troop by purchasing some popcorn.

MUTANT HIGH SCHOOL IS COMING
Coming next week, we’ve got a special zine release just for Empire of the Cyclops Con! We’re talking about the new Mutant High School zine!

Mutant High School is a zine published by Goodman Games and released exclusively for Empire of the Cyclops Con. It will be hit our store the week of the con and will only be available while supplies last.

Look for more details next week, but for now, let’s let author Brendan LaSalle describe it for us:

Mutant High School isn’t my love letter to Troma Films, especially Class of Nuke ‘Em High and The Toxic Avenger: it’s more of a jotted note on notebook paper, slipped to you while the teacher wasn’t looking. I had a ton of fun working on it. The zine format is so much fun – it’s like making a ship in a bottle. I think this zine has just enough background and crunch for Judges to write their own No-Go City mutant adventures.
Toxic waste mutates the populace of a city, but the kids still need an education.

Welcome to Mutant High School, where the students have evolved beyond the curriculum. Can toxic teens survive killer robots, mutant gangsters, toxic truthers, and exams? The answers are hidden behind the walls of No-Go City, and you must find them!

Check out the video at the link below to watch Judge Brendan running a group of unsuspecting players through an early playtest version of Mutant High School from 1000 Insane Worlds. And look for Mutant High School next week as a part of Empire of the Cyclops Con!
EMPIRE OF THE CYCLOPS CON
ANNOUNCING THE DEALER'S HALL AND ARTIST'S ALLEY LINEUPS
Just because Empire of the Cyclops Con is a virtual experience, that doesn’t mean it won’t have all those healthy ingredients that make up a proper convention — the panels, the gaming, and yes, even the Dealers Hall and Artist's Alley!

That means great con specials, unique deals, and opportunities to interact with publishers and developers, original artwork, prints, and much more. Through the magic of our In-Con experience, Con attendees will have the opportunity to not only shop for great Con merch, but interact with the creators themselves during certain times.

So, while the Dealer’s Hall and Artist's Alley iare open around the clock for the entirety of the convention — stop by any time for amazing deals and Empire of the Cyclops Con exclusives — the best opportunity to meet the people behind the products will be at the appointed times. For all three days of the convention, the hours will be from 4 to 6 pm EST — feel free to stop in and chat with or ask questions of our terrific group of exhibitors.

Of course, you’ll have to sign up for Empire of the Cyclops Con if you want to hit the Dealer's Hall or Artist's Alley.

ONLY A FEW SEATS REMAIN FOR THE SAVE XCRAWL TOURNAMENT
As of this writing, there are fewer than a dozen slots left open for this year’s DCC Open Tournament! If you are going to help Save Xcrawl, you’ll have to sign up now before all the slots are filled up!

With the Empire threatening to take Xcrawl out of the public sphere and make it a military-only training tool, the nation is in an uproar. Now the Oracle of Key West makes a startling pronouncement: the Gods of Olympus declare that if the Adventurer’s League can put together a crawl that delights all the Children of Cronos approve of, they shall declare the Empire’s ruling void and Xcrawl shall remain the measure of the common man. Will you rise to meet the challenge!

Save Xcrawl is the 2021 Empire of the Cyclops Con tournament adventure, designed by Terry Olsen, Marc Bruner, Stephen Newton, Marzio Muscedere, and Brendan LaSalle.

Here’s the description from the TableTop Events page:

Announcing the return of the annual DCC Open Tournament, this year featuring Xcrawl Classics! Get ready to enter the area and compete for the coveted title of DCC Open tournament champion with you and your team whose names will be immortalized on the Gong of Doom!

Like prior tournaments, this will be a team tournament for teams of up to 5 players. While players are encouraged to enter as a team, you do not need to be part of a team to register, players will be matched with other players to create teams prior to the tournament.

This is the 1st flight of our annual DCC tournament. This year the tournament will consist of two rounds, with two flights of Round 1 games of five-player teams occurring on Friday and Saturday, with the top team from each flight moving on to the finals in Round 2 held Saturday night. Players are only required to purchase tickets for Round 1.

Sign up today to be a part the 2021 DCC Open Tournament at Empire of the Cyclops Con! The winning team will have their names inscribed upon The Gong of Doom!

ADVANCE LOOK AT THE IN-CON EXPERIENCE FOR EMPIRE OF THE CYCLOPS CON
Recently we showed off the map for Empire of the Cyclops Con, but the map is only part of the experience.

If you’ve attended one of our online cons before, you’re already familiar with the in-con experience online. It’s a chance to wander through the map and meet up with other gamers, vendors, artists, and even some other interactive happenings. It’s as close as we can get to an actual convention venture while staying virtual for the show.

If you haven’t been to one, then you’re in for a treat. It’s a fantastic experience that allows you to create an avatar and be a part of the show.

In fact, we’ve got a video to show you exactly what it’s like. Follow the link below to give it a look, and we’ll see you at Empire of the Cyclops Con!

FINAL DAYS!
SUPPORT THE TALES FROM THE SMOKING WYRM KICKSTARTER
Tales from the Smoking Wyrm is back! And this time out, they’ve brought a friend.

The smash-hit third-part zine is returning with all-new material for a fourth issue, and you can help make it a reality over on Kickstarter. The first three issues of the zine were amazing, and there is little doubt that the fourth will be just as stellar.

This time, however, the Kickstarter is funding more than just the basic zine. The folks over at Blind Visionary Productions have added in a monograph.

The Smoking Wyrm Monograph is their new companion zine. In the Monograph they offer a detailed look at a single thing, focusing on usability. In this first issue, they offer a complete adventure focused on starting out a troll party the right way! You get a complete adventure for first-level trolls, including unique troll occupations to get you started, and a very folklore-driven storyline to explore. And you’ll find those trolls in the fourth issue of the main zine…

The fourth issue of the Tales from the Smoking Wyrm zine will contain eight features, usable by both players and judges:

  • Trolls—We delve deep into Scandinavian lore to explore the troll folklore and myth. Trolls are so diverse a group that we had to build not one, but three classes to fit them all in! Trolls are fae in nature, and make wonderful PCs for any group!
  • On Luck: Trolls—We a start a new regular series with this issue—On Luck! DCC RPG features a wonderfully unique luck mechanic, and here we delve into ways to hack it, and make it even cooler! This issue we pair this piece with the trolls class, and investigate how trolls might use luck differently than other classes.
  • Familiars—We hinted at them in issue 3, but they are finally here—two new familiar types–elemental motes and jinn!
  • Cullpepper’s Herbal—More herbs for your game! This time, we feature two herbs—Black Alder and Angelica are all waiting for you to delve into! No adventurer should be without these!
  • Organizations—The beginning of another large series where we explore the concept of organizations in roleplaying in general, and discuss the salient features an organization needs to really be used effectively in any roleplaying game. To top this article off—we explore three different organizations, breathing some depth into two organizations presented in the DCC RPG and offering up a new one on top of that!
  • Ponteverdian Potted Meat—You’re deep underground, without easy access to the surface and the fresh markets above. How do you survive? Ponteverdian Potted Meat covers 6 different preserved products, and how they can help prolong your life in the hardest of places to find nourishment! Come join us for a truly delectable discussion about something every character needs—food!
  • Onward Retainer, starring the Legion—The fourth installment of our adventuring comic in an old school style, brought to you by Joel Phillips! The tension mounts in the pages we present in this issue!
  • Wyrm Words—A word puzzle of all the Gygaxian words in the fourth issue—this way, a definition is never in doubt! Also included are the answers to the third issue’s Wyrm Words.

The Kickstarter is fully funded and well on its way to reaching the first of many stretch goals. Head on over to their Kickstarter and help reach not just one, but all of those goals! Belly up to the bar! The Smoking Wyrm has opened its doors once again.
SUPPORT THE IMPACT DICE KICKSTARTER
We want to give this Kickstarter a glowing recommendation!

The Impact Miniatures Unleashed Arcana Kickstarter is live and going strong! This new Kickstarter is from the manufacturer of Goodman Games’ dice and features three new sets of DCC Glow Dice and some other sets as well. Each of these glow-in-the-dark dice sets has the unique quality of glowing in a specific color, adding mood and tone to your (darkened) gaming table. And all three new DCC Glow Dice sets feature new artwork from Doug Kovacs!

For dice fans, this Kickstarter is a must!

Here’s the description from the Kickstarter:

As the wizards prepare to cast their most powerful spells … they need the tools that will make their spells bring terror to their foes. Impact! Miniatures in collaboration with Goodman Games bring you the latest new DCC dice to add the Unleashed Arcana to your RPG experience.

The Glow Sets offer limited edition inserts each with a new spell for DCC on the back of the inserts from the amazing mind of Harley Stroh.

The Mage Bullets set brings in elements of the Old West with Gunmetal and Copper swirled as well as an added D18 and D22 to spice up your dice chain possibilities.

A DCC RPG dice set contains the normal RPG 7 dice (D4, D6, D8, D10, D%10, D12, and D20) along with 7 extra dice (D3, D5, D7, D14, D16, D24, and D30).

Head on over to the Kickstarter today and show your support! Every gamer loves dice, and this is a fantastic way to add to your collection!
SUPPORT THE TOURNAMENT OF PIGS KICKSTARTER
Take Dungeon Crawl Classics and add a touch of Xcrawl Classics and you might get something similar to The Tournament of Pigs Boxed Set from Weird Works, now running over on Kickstarter!

This new boxed set gives you everything you need to run the adventure, including a battlemap, player aids, and even character standees to put you on the field. And if you want to kick it up to the next level, this campaign also offers optional miniatures to go along with the adventure.

Here’s a description straight from the Kickstarter campaign:

Tournament of Pigs is an unforgettable adventure that has players taking the role of commoners trapped in a medieval game show competition. The twelve events test luck and skill, but also creativity and improvisation. Do you think you can cook a cake good enough for the king? How good are you at wrestling greased piglets? Can you outrun an aberration while tied to another hapless contender?

The adventure introduces semi-competitive play as players not only attempt to survive but also uncover the secrets of each event and score valuable Silver Prizes. The tournament is bloody, but if a player’s character is killed another event starts soon, and the player brings a new character into the competition.

Unlike most adventure modules, Tournament of Pigs is not fully cooperative. Players will be competing to score the most points by the end of the session, to be declared the winner. Just how competitive the players want to play it is entirely up to them.

It’s death and mayhem on a celebratory scale! Fans are sure to be cheering your fourth, and maybe even fifth, character as they fight for their lives! Blood, mayhem, and death…they all await you in the Tournament of Pigs Boxed Set!

SUPPORT "SEEKERS OF THE UN-K'NOWN" NEW MCC THIRD-PARTY KICKSTARTER
From Dandyline Games and author Louis Hoefer comes an exciting new ‘zine that takes your Mutant Crawl Classics game to the next level! It is The Stuff of Legend…

Right now over on Kickstarter, you can provide support to help make Seekers of the Un-K’Nown a reality and add another layer to the world of MCC RPG. Here’s a description of the book, straight from the Kickstarter campaign:

You have heard it told: during the Protracted Catacylem of the 2nd Epoch, this dying planet was clinched in war with an invasive alien force known as the “Destrageists.” Hailing from beyond the red planet, the Space Probe Agency called upon the heroes of that era to prepare a defense against these fungal lifeforms. There are (rather melodic) epic ballads that tell the tale of Rogo Khan- a cunning military strategist- and Zee L’Gar- an ostentatious futurist and inventor. These two culled their might to lead an army of well-trained and technologically-aided ancients to combat these foreign invaders. Possibly ending the cataclysm and uniting the “nay-shuns” of the ancients, this duo and their shock-troops seemingly couldn’t be stopped. Yes, the grandeur of their exploits is something of mythology now but even respectable elders sometimes admit a deep-seated belief that such character might have been real and that their fabled base, Quartum-Q with all its technological enchantment may still exist!

In Seekers of the Un-K’Nown, recent explosions of ancient ordinances have awoken something evil. The creature, thought to be ‘smart-metal’, has been raiding your village at night-making off with livestock, pets, and now even villagers. your under-performance as a seeker has kept you alive and off-duty this long, but last night, Horga-Lu- the mother of your love-promise- was taken and the village chief deems it fitting that YOU should traverse the dreaded “Lands of Boom” and find where this ancient terror is holding its captives. Can you save your future mother-in-law? What is the “smart-metal’ up to? And what of all those childhood tales about Quartum-Q and the brave heroes that once defended the ancients?

Here’s just a taste of what you’ll find inside Seekers of the Un-K’Nown:

  • Includes two double-sided 11″ x 17″ maps of Quartum-Q filled with “old-school” goodness including: tricks, traps, and imagative encounters.
  • Includes a breadth of new monsters and “ancient” artifacts—not to mention a multitude of Easter eggs to warm the hearts of old dungeoneers.

The Kickstarter is already fully funded, but there are some great stretch goals just around the corner! Help them reach their next tier and get these rewards:

  • An additional color hex map of the lands around Quartum-Q
  • More character art and table of pregenerated 1st-level characters with starting gear!

GOODMAN NEWS
BEHOLD THE DAY OF MIGHT!
Sharpen your blades and hone your daggers — the Day of Might is finally here!

Fans of sword-and-sorcery, heed the Skull’s decree! After sorting through the myriad strange folkways and seemingly-pointless holidays celebrated in the mortal realms, the Skull has reinstated his own day of celebration — the Day of Might. Henceforth, the anniversary of the day in which the Skull first revealed himself to the modern world, October 23rd, will forever be known as the Day of Might — and mighty indeed will be that day, so sayeth the Skull.

No esoteric formulae, fake beards, or roasted bird torsos are required for this day of days, only a proper reverence for sword-and-sorcery fiction! So join with the Skull and his many adherents over the lands to celebrate the genre of mighty thews, flashing swords, and sinister supernatural forces. Bang a gong, light a candle, crack open some two-fisted adventure and reflect on all the many ways in which sword-and-sorcery is the genre that can easily beat up all the other genres, take their lunch money, and spend the proceeds on horns of mead and sacks of uncut wine.

Hey, that sounds like the start of a new tradition!
WATCH THE NEW EPISODE OF FEEDING THE CYCLOPS!
Imagine the courage it must take to confront a Cyclops with spear and sword — now imagine doing so with just a bottle of … Gnomish Ale?!

Our intrepid hosts have once more braved the presence of the hangry cyclops because there is a lot to talk about in Goodman Games news! This week, Susan and Brett have more to say about Empire of the Cyclops Con — including talk of Gather.Town pickup games every Friday until the convention itself! — as well as current and future Kickstarters, nominations for the Goodie Awards, DCC Horror and It Consumes!, new print runs of some classically brutal funnels, sword-and-sorcery’s own holiday the Day of Might, and the forthcoming Save Xcrawl Tournament at Empire of the Cyclops Con.

All that plus, you know, the menacing presence and rumbling tummy of the Cyclops! It’s going to take more than cookies this time to keep Brett and Susan out of the frying pan…
CARPE BACULUM: A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER
by Fletcher Vredenburgh
I did not buy this book based on the cover. I did, however, buy it based on the illustration for the first chapter. I like Roger Zelazny well enough, but Gahan Wilson illustrations can get me to buy almost anything.

Still, when I first bought A Night in the Lonesome October (taken from a line in “Ulalume” by Poe), a comic horror novel that brings together more classic monsters and villains than all the Universal monsters movies put together, I did not expect it to become one of my favorite books. Written by Roger Zelazny and illustrated by Gahan Wilson, if you’ve missed it, just go buy it. Nothing I could write is sufficient to convey the utter dark delight that is the book...
UNEARTHING DAVID DRAKE'S "THE BARROW TROLL"
by Brian Murphy
David Drake’s “The Barrow Troll” was originally published in December 1975 in Whispers magazine, a former periodical specializing in dark fantasy and horror. Beginning in 1977 editor Stuart David Schiff released the first of six best-of anthologies in a series also entitled Whispers. “The Barrow Troll” appeared in the first of these, which is where I first discovered this wonderful fusion of horror and sword-and-sorcery.

In his introduction to the story, Schiff describes “The Barrow Troll” as “a brutal and shocking piece.” That about sums it up. It’s probably my favorite entry in what is an almost-uniformly excellent collection (though Karl Edward Wagner’s “Sticks” is an absolute gem), and was one of only four short stories to be nominated for a World Fantasy Award in 1976...
FILMS OF HIGH ADVENTURE: H.P. LOVECRAFT
by Bob Brinkman
The Films of High Adventure series examines the impact that the authors of Appendix N have had on the world at large. This time out, we’re the spookiness of Halloween with an article on all of his works that have made their way to the big (or small) screen.

The works of H. P. Lovecraft are among the most frequently adapted of any Appendix N author. To date, I’m aware of over 700 film and television offerings that either directly adapt or are heavily inspired by Lovecraft. As you can well imagine, that is a bit more than I can cover in a single column.
BUY POPCORN TO SUPPORT HAVEN GOODMAN'S CUB SCOUT TROOP
We here at Goodman Games of course love our tabletop dramas, but we are also big supporters of real-life adventures!
