Golden Gate - Summer Fog
Yoshiko Yamamoto's NEW Triptych Depicting The Golden Gate Bridge & Patches of Summer Fog

Yoshiko Yamamoto_s Latest Triptych_ Golden Gate Summer Fog
In a recent blog post, Yoshiko writes about her fascination with the Golden Gate Bridge:

Why do we all love the San Francisco landmark Golden Gate Bridge? Is it its graceful design of the suspension bridge? Or its famous warm red paint color? Or the astonishing turquoise color of the Golden Gate Strait?

To me it's all about the fog.  Sometimes it wafts in gently from the Pacific, other times totally engulfing and completely obscuring the view of the bridge. Yes, it makes for chilly summer mornings in San Francisco. But I love the fog in San Francisco.

Especially as artist I'm fascinated by fog. Without the famous fog, the bridge looks naked and sad, losing symmetry. The bridge becomes whole with the fog and I'm totally obsessed by its interplay with the landscape.

The Campanile
Yoshiko Yamamoto's Tribute to Berkeley & Sather Tower's Centennial

Sather Tower, the beloved landmark of University of California Berkeley (a.k.a "The Campanile") celebrates its 100th year this year. Designed by John Galen Howard, the architect responsible for the overall Beaux-Art-style campus, the Campanile was built on a central axis overlooking the sweeping view of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate.

Yoshiko Yamamoto_s _The Campanile_ Detail
More commonly known as "The Campanile" for its resemblance to the Campanile di San Marco in Venice.
Sather Tower is named after its benefactress, Jane K. Sather, who bequeathed $225,000 for the project, just months before her death in 1911. Begun in 1913, the cornerstone was put in place March 1914 and the tower opened to visitors, paying 10ยข each, in March 1916.

The Campanile's bells left England in 1916, delayed a full year due to risk of attack to British cargo ships during WW!, and arrived in San Francisco later that year. The bells reached Berkeley 100 years ago this month, October 1917. Comprising a carillon of fewer than 23 bells, they were first played by a student at a Cal-Washington football game, November 3, 1917.

As a graduate of UC Berkeley, Yoshiko Yamamoto remembers the years of intense study, heavy backpacks filled with books, and the wondrous sound of the campanile. She writes, "This Campanile print is my tribute to the memory of those creative days in Berkeley and our beautiful Campanile!"
The Campanile print is letterpress-printed, using thirteen hand-carved blocks on 100% cotton paper. Yoshiko displayed proofs of these thirteen blocks during our 40th Anniversary Celebration (see below) The print is a signed and numbered edition of 240 prints. Matted size: 12" x 18" $95 or framed in either a Dard Hunter Quarter Sawn Oak frame: 15" x 22.5" or an Ebonized Walnut frame: 13.75" x 19.5" $285. Available ONLINE or in our shop.

Oversize Civil War Era US Flag
Dana and Lee show off this full sized Civil War Era American Flag, framed in a contemporary matt white Roma moulding to suit the owner's minimalist entryway decor. The flag was placed on a slightly off-white linen fabric that had been stretched over a padded base, covered with unbleached muslin over acid-free board, and adhered to wood stretcher supports. The flag itself is adhered to the backing using only four stitches and relies on pressure to hold it in place.   Optium Museum Acrylic glazing assures anti-reflective transparency and UV protection. The framed flag is 60"  x 100".

What makes our digital restoration different?

Mike Wells_ Graphics Manager_ The Framer_s Workshop As the Graphics Manager of The Framer's Workshop, I take a personal interest in all my projects. When it comes to digital restoration, I do some of the work myself, in-house. However, some restoration projects are either so time consuming or require special skills, making it more cost effective to upload them to a site that specializes in restoration work.

The problem is that what comes back may not be completely satisfactory. The two children's photos above are an example. The flesh and clothing color looked good but the background color was made a bright 'cotton candy' pink. I knew this wasn't what the customer was hoping for so I readjusted the background color to a more neutral lavender-blue.  I almost always fine tune or modify the restored image files in order to give our clients the best possible outcome.

If you have a special restoration or other graphics related project needing my personal attention, I'm usually in the shop Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Or feel free to call and make an appointment: 510-849-4444.
