Two Seattle City Council debates, vastly different tones
Two sets of council candidates vying for office faced off in Greenwood Saturday. The tension surrounding homeless encampments was clear from the beginning of the District 5 debate between incumbent Debora Juarez and challenger Ann Davison Sattler. The debate that followed, the District 6 matchup between Heidi Wills and Dan Strauss, had a more civil tone, but policy differences over issues like needle exchanges were clear. KUOW reporter Amy Radil and Morning Edition host Angela King moderated those debates – what were their takeaways?

A successful campaign, mired in debt
It was all smiles when the One Washington Equality Campaign turned in enough voter signatures to get affirmative action measure I-1000 before the Legislature. That initiative, which lawmakers put on the November ballot, aims at getting the state to once again consider factors like race and gender in state hiring, contracting and education. But months later, the campaign still owes $1.3 million – most of it to the companies that gathered those signatures.
