Hail Storm and Your Home

Recently we had a hailstorm come through our community. Below you will find some information to keep in mind when dealing with hail damage to your home:

  • Call your insurance company before you file a claim. Understand your policy, and if you file a claim now and another storm hits your home this year, you may have to pay your deductible twice.
  • Laws have changed regarding the payment of your deductible. You must pay your deductible. If a roofer is caught waiving your deductible both the roofing company and you, the homeowner could face paying the deductible along with up to a $2,000 fine and up to six months in jail.
  • Roofing Contractors have already started going door to door in our community. Keep in mind that the Town of Little Elm requires solicitors to have a permit from the TOLE, and they must be wearing it before soliciting residents. You can report unlicensed solicitors to the non-emergency Police number (214) 975-0460.
  • When hiring a roofer make sure you do your due diligence:
  • The Town of Little Elm requires all roofers to register before installing roofs in the community.
  • Require the roofer to provide you with proof of insurance. Ask your insurance agent to review the amount of coverage the contractor has quoted and enough to cover the repairs or replacement needed.
  • Check the contractor's reviews.
  • Understand where the contractor's company is based. Are they local, and can they provide warranty service to your area?
  • Check with the roofing materials manufacturer. Confirm that the installer is certified to install shingles for the manufacturer. Most shingles warranties will warranty the installation if done by a certified installer.
  • The Town of Little Elm and the Two Sunset Pointe HOA require you to receive approval and permits before work can begin on your roof.
  • You must secure approval from the HOA on the type and color of your new roof.
  • You, the homeowner, will receive an email from the HOA when a decision on your new roof has been made. Please have your contractor take a copy of the approval letter to the Town of Little Elm to obtain a roofing permit before any work has begun.
  • 3 Tab shingles are not approved in Sunset Pointe
