Two Webinars Sponsored by Mass Humanities to be Hosted

by Old Sturbridge Village

Clothing the Family and The Portraiture of Ezra Woolson, Two Webinars Free to Public

Sturbridge, M.A. – Old Sturbridge Village will host two free webinars for the public in August and September, funded by a Bridge Street Sponsorship through Mass Humanities. Clothing the Family: A Museum Wide Effort will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, and The Portraiture of Ezra Woolson will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21, via Zoom. Pre-registration is required for both events.

Clothing the Family: A Museum Wide Effort will feature Collections Manager and Curator of Textiles, Rebecca Beall, Coordinator of Households, Jean Contino, and Historical Clothing Coordinator, Carrie Midura as they discuss the new avenues that Old Sturbridge Village is taking in relation to exhibiting, interpreting, and recreating textiles and textile production in early 19th-century New England.

Textile Weekend takes place every year at OSV, most recently running Aug. 13 & 14, to celebrate the history of textile production. This webinar will expand on a new exhibit that was unveiled during the event, Needle and Thread: The Art and Skill of Clothing an Early 19-Century Family, and will discuss how all of this work has culminated into an exciting new textile program that is visible throughout the Village.

Registration for the Aug. 25 event can be found at: https://www.osv.org/event/webinar-clothing-the-family-a-museum-wide-effort/.

The Portraiture of Ezra Woolson will feature Director of Collections and Research, Derek Heidemann and Art Conservator, Theresa Carmichael, as they take a closer look at the portraiture of New Hampshire itinerant painter, Ezra Woolson (1824-1845) within the Old Sturbridge Village Museum Collections.

Not much is known about Woolson’s short career as an itinerant painter, but he started painting at a young age. The earliest painting in the OSV collection was created when he was just 16 and the latest when he was 19. Unfortunately, Woolson passed away in 1845 at the age of 21, and only left a few portraits behind. The webinar will discuss these remaining portraits within the collection and get a better understanding of his techniques and evolution of skill over that short period of time.

Registration for the Sept. 21 event can be found at: https://www.osv.org/event/webinar-the-portraiture-of-ezra-woolson/.

Mass Humanities creates opportunities for the people of Massachusetts to transform their lives and build a more equitable commonwealth through the humanities. Their Bridge Street Sponsorships allow funding for free online programs hosted by Massachusetts historical societies, centers, museums or historical sites – such as OSV – to enable free access to learning and educational opportunities.
