Governor Perry calls for 

2nd Special Session

 

 The 83rd Legislative session ended May 27, 2013 and Governor Rick Perry immediately announced a special session of the Texas Legislature to begin at 6:00 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2013 to consider redistricting legislation, funding transportation, juvenile justice and restricting abortion in Texas.   

 

When the 1st Special Session ended Tuesday, June 25th at midnight after a lengthy 11 hour filibuster by Senator Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, Governor Perry announced Wednesday the Legislature to begin 30 more days of work starting Monday, July 1st saying there is too much important work remaining undone for the people of Texas.

HB 1491 - Relating to the temporary licensing of a dentist who performs voluntary charity care.

HB 595 - Relating to certain health programs and councils (Statewide Data Collection System)

HB 3201 - Relating to the practice of dentistry; imposing surcharges and fees.

Signed by Governor 6/14/2013. This Act takes effect January 1, 2014, except Sections 1, 4, and 10 take effect September 1, 2013. 

 

HB 2483 - Relating to including oral health education as part of the coordinated health program for public elementary, middle, and junior high school students.

SB 8 - Relating to the provision and delivery of certain health and human services in this state, including the provision of those services through the Medicaid program and the prevention of fraud, waste, and abuse in that program and other programs.

SB 632 -Relating to contracts between optometrists or therapeutic optometrists and health maintenance organizations or insurers.

Governor Appoints New Members to the
State Board of Dental Examiners
The Governor appoints all 15 members that serve a 6 year staggered term whose mission is to safeguard the dental health of Texans.  The 5 members whose new term begins in 2013 are:  
 

1.  Steven J. Austin was reappointed to the board to serve another six year term ending February 1, 2019.  Dr. Austin is an Amarillo dentist in private practice who received his bachelor's degree from West Texas State University, a master's degree in theology from the Dallas Theological Institute, and a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry.

2.  Kirby Bunel Jr. of Texarkana is an oral surgeon who received a bachelor's degree from Baylor University, a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Baylor College of Dentistry and completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. 
3.  Tim O'Hare of Farmers Branch is an attorney in private practice and owner of O'Hare Real Estate.  O'Hare received a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas and a law degree from the Southern Methodist University School of Law.
4.  Lois Palermo of League City is a clinical dental hygienist, examiner for the Western Regional Examination Board and chair of the Dental Hygiene Advisory Board. Palermo received an associate degree in dental hygiene from Del Mar College and a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston.
5.  Lewis White of Humble was reappointed to the board and is an attorney and corporate counsel for Innovative Paradigm Solutions. White received his bachelor's degree from McMurry University and law degree from the Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law. 


Change in DSHS OHP Leadership

Effective June 24, 2013 

 

Linda Altenhoff, DDS recently accepted a new legislatively mandated position as the Health and Human Services Commission Chief Dental Officer for the Office of Inspector General, Enforcement Division.

 

Margaret Bruch, LCSW, Health Screening and Case Management Unit Director for the Department of State Health Services will act as interim lead for the Texas Oral Health Program.

 

 

New ADHA Vice President Elected

 

Sandy Tesch, RDH, MSHP, Oral Health Program Specialist for the Texas Department of State Health Services was recently elected Vice President of the American Dental Hygienists' Association during their national annual convention in Boston, MA and as members gathered to celebrate 100 years of the dental hygiene profession.
