Working Together

to

Manage Diabetes

The National Diabetes Education Program is pleased to announce that the updated Working Together to Manage Diabetes Toolkit is now available online at  http://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/ndep/ppod.htm.

This newly enhanced toolkit was designed especially for pharmacists, podiatrists, optometrists, dentists, and other providers to help them work together to recognize the early danger signs of diabetes, decrease the risk of complications, and manage medication therapy.   The Working Together to Manage Diabetes Toolkit features a comprehensive, easy-to-use guide, a customizable PowerPoint presentation, and user-friendly patient fact sheets and checklists for providers and consumers.

Help your patients with diabetes get the care they need. Too many people with diabetes are not getting their annual foot, eye ,and oral exams, or managing their medication. You have the power to change that. The enhanced Working Together to Manage Diabetes Toolkit empowers pharmacists, podiatrists, optometrists, dentists, and other providers to deliver
more integrated care for patients with, or at risk for, diabetes. When you work in tandem with other health care providers, you become more effective at recognizing the early danger signs of diabetes, decreasing the risk of complications, and managing medication therapy.

Learn from PPOD professionals who have worked collaboratively in their communities to better care for patients at risk for diabetes and those who already have diabetes using PPOD
tools. The webinar provides a "quick course" on diabetes and how PPOD health care providers can collaborate and make cross-disciplinary treatment referrals. Register for one of three webinars by following the links below.

Arkansas: Senator Indicated Intent to File Legislation to Pursue Innovation Waiver Sooner

Kids Well Campaign Weekly Update
July 22, 2014

Senator Sanders (R), one of the champions of Arkansas's Private Option, indicated that he plans to file legislation during the 2015 legislative session to allow Arkansas to pursue a Section 1332 waiver, reported
the Times Record.  Section 1332 waivers, a new type of innovation waiver authorized under the Affordable Care Act, become an option for states beginning in 2017, but Sanders is hoping that Congress will make the waiver authority available  sooner. Sanders has not yet indicated what type of flexibility he anticipates the
state would pursue under the 1332 waiver.
Two U.S. Appeals Courts
Issued Contradictory Rulings on Subsidies in States using the Federal Marketplace

Kids Well Campaign Weekly Update
July 22, 2014

On July 22, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled that the government could not subsidize healthcare premiums for people living in States that utilize the Federal Marketplace, HealthCare.gov. The 2-to-1 decision would eliminate financial assistance to millions of people who gained coverage through the Federal Marketplace and were determined eligible for subsidies. Rejecting the decision, the White House said the Department of Justice intended to request that the entire appeals court rehear the case.

Just hours later, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in Richmond issued an opposing ruling, deciding unanimously that subsidies could be used to obtain coverage through any of the Marketplaces, including the Federal Marketplace. With the federal appeals courts split, the issue could end up at the Supreme Court.
