TYLERTOWN TORNADO RELIEF:

HELP FOR PETS AND PEOPLE NEEDED

Two devastating tornadoes ripped through Tylertown, Mississippi this weekend, causing widespread devastation. The two tornadoes, an EF-3 and and EF-4, followed a similar track, leaving an absolutely heartbreakingt path of destruction. 

We’re in shock and full of gratitude that we were spared. The Humane Society of Louisiana operates 3 animal care facilities in and around the area, near the border of Mississippi and Louisiana. Our Tylertown Animal Transport Center, the Enoch J. Donaldson Sanctuary and the Merry Wood Refuge were all untouched. A short drive down our road, however, reveals twisted wreckage and shocking destruction. It’s terrifying to think what might have happened

To respond to the crisis in our backyard, we are getting to work helping others who were less fortunate. 

Just as in so many of our Louisiana parishes, Walthall County has no public animal shelter, and the community had urgent animal protection needs even before the tornadoes. Jessica Cameron, HSLA Director of Animal Care & Transports also runs MAP, Mississippi Animal Project. HSLA and MAP were regularly inundated with requests from residents seeking help with vet care, pet food and supplies. More than 20% of residents in Walthall County live in poverty.

This disaster will have a devastating impact on local people and their animals. Both MAP and HSLA are collecting food and supplies for distribution to the public. 

HSLA is coordinating a drive for needed supplies at a previously scheduled event in New Orleans this weekend. People wanting to help may drop off contributions and supply donations at: Easter Bunny Spring Market & Bake Sale, HSLA Headquarters, 618 Derbigny Street, Gretna, LA 70053. Saturday, March 22nd, 11am - 2pm.
