Tyner's Top 10
Sea Kings,

This year we are introducing a new weekly newsletter called "Tyner's Top 10" in honor of our principal Dr. Tyner. Each week Dr. Tyner will focus on 10 things happening here at PVHS to highlight our students, staff, and all of the amazing things happening on campus. We will also show the upcoming week at a glance with information about any bell schedules or main events happening on campus.

Enjoy!
1. Academics Spotlight
Our brand new Mindfulness class is off to a great start. Introduction to Mindfulness is a year-long (UC approved “G” elective) course that introduces mindfulness, the science surrounding it, and careers associated with it. Students will develop a personal mindfulness practice for stress resilience and learn to improve self and social awareness, relationships and decision making. Interested? Talk to your counselor or follow them on Instagram @seakingcalm
2. Athletics Spotlight
Cross Country hosted their first meet of the year at home versus Saugus and Mira Costa. Shout out to the boy's varsity team for winning the meet.
3. Activities Spotlight
ASB hosted our first pep rally of the year at nutrition on Thursday before the football game versus Narbonne. It was a ton of fun for all students. Thank you ASB for all your hard work!
4. Fine Arts Spotlight
Our award winning live broadcast program, Live from 205, had their first show on Friday. The entire program is student ran and produced. For more information go to their website, https://livefrom205.com/
5. Staff Spotlight
Gayle Carpenter is our new Associate Principal in the counseling office. Gayle has had over 11 years of experience in administration and is a great addition to the PVHS admin team.
6. Wellness Center
PVHS is lucky to have two student support specialists on campus, Ms. De La Rosa and Ms. Washington! Students can stop by the wellness center at any point to say hi, take a break, or get some homework done after school. The Wellness Center is a safe space for all students and is located next to the main office.
7. Student Spotlight
Skylar McVicar, senior at PVHS, gave her first report as Student Representative to the Board of Education last Wednesday. Skylar looks forward to serving as a liasion to the Board and providing a student voice. Skylar is pictured here, in PV colors, next to new Superintendent, Dr. Alex Cherniss.
8. BINGO
During the month of September all students have the opportunity to play  PV High BINGO.

The rules are simple, complete as many BINGOs (up, across, diagonal) as you can in a month. Each BINGO you complete is another chance at a prize. Prizes include red tide gear, free homecoming dance tickets, and more. Every time they complete a task, they will get a signature to verify completion.

All BINGO cards will be turned in at the end of the month to the office and winners will be chosen then.

Good luck Sea Kings!
9. College and Career Center
The CCC hosted our first College Knowledge Night for all seniors on Wednesday. Representatives from Pomona College, UCLA, and more were there to talk to students about applications, financial aid, and more. We had a packed house with parents and students eager to learn about the college process. Thank you to Mrs. Lewis and the CCC for coordinating this event!

Health and Wellness

Welcome back to the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. Thanks to the interest and concern the PVPUSD administration, I have been asked to write a weekly column addressing emotional, behavioral, drug, and alcohol issues, and  we are hoping to help you navigate through some issues and challenges that many teens and families face. My goal is to provide clear, and helpful insights and suggestions, on topics such as depression, suicide, cutting, anxiety, social media, latest drug use, vaping, alcohol use as well as to provide tips for increasing well-being, self-esteem, positive thinking, and happiness. Whew! That covers a lot!

As a psychologist practicing for 42 years in this community, I have a good amount of knowledge and insight that I would like to share with you. In addition, we would like to know what topics or questions you would like to see addressed. You can submit anything you would like to be covered t to askdrgelbart@gmail.com  . Your inquiries will always remain anonymous.

When children experience difficulties, it generally takes parents months, if not years, to become clearly aware of the problems they are having. A goal of this column will be to increase awareness and knowledge, and decrease the time it takes to provide the proper assistance. I look forward to your feedback, your questions, and to a great year.
