4. Tritons Walk Spotlight
Our Be the Change (BTC) hosted their annual Remember the Tritons Walk on Friday. This year BTC chose to walk in honor of two of our very own Sea Kings, varsity basketball coach Brian Edelman and Associate Principal Keely Hafer. Brian was diagnosed with colon cancer and Keely was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year. Thanks to our students, staff, and community, we were able to donate over $20,000 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, one of the leading organizations in finding a cure for blood cancers. Walkers were decked out in orange and blue to show their support. Thank you to everyone who walked, donated, and supported this event. We could not do it without you!
5. PVIT Spotlight
Congratulations to Noah Lin, Dominic Bidondo-Yore, and Aaron Guo for taking 1st Place at the Raytheon Engineering Games. This was PV High’s first year attending this competition celebration of Engineers Week where these three PVIT students demonstrated their superior engineering skills with students from 35 South Bay schools. The teams had 2 hours to design, build, program, and test a rover that tracked a black line around a course with sharp hairpin turns. Stop by in a couple weeks to see the large Raytheon trophy proudly displayed in the office for the next 12 months. Congratulations to these three young engineers!

Also, two of PVIT's VEX team traveled to Google's corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale to compete in Google's VEX Signature High School event. Both teams were very competitive with 25 of the top teams in California and 25 more from around the country. Team 62019X was on the 8th place alliance going into the Round of 16, and ultimately lost to the #1 team in quarter finals. Everyone got a good look at what the State Championships will look like next month, and all three PVIT VEX teams are working hard on final preparations for States.
6. Girls Soccer Spotlight
Girls Soccer beat La Serna 2-0 in the CIF Quarterfinal round and went on to compete in the Semi-Finals. Unfortunately the team lost after an overtime battle during penalty kicks to South. Congratulations girls on a great season and excellent CIF competition!
7. Exchange Program Spotlight
This past week PV High was home to over 500 visiting students from Saitama Sakae High School in Japan. PVHS has been participating in this exchange program each year to provide our students with an opportunity to learn about different cultures and connect with students all across the world. Students visited classrooms, went on campus tours, and laughed together while making memories that will last a lifetime.
8. CCC Spotlight
The MPR was again packed with Sea King families and their students grades 9-11 on Wednesday evening to learn all about our California Public Colleges: the UC's, Cal States and CA Community Colleges. Santa Monica College talked about dual enrollment and the California Promise, Cal State Dominguez Hills shared info on how to calculate your Student Index for admission purposes, and UCLA explained Eligibility in the Local Context and how applications are evaluated among so many other topics. The next presentation in the College Essentials Toolkit will be on March 4th at 6pm in the CCC and will be a panel discussion about different types of colleges in different regions of the US and abroad.
9. Student Spotlight
Adam and Emmet Paul, two of PVIT's Battlebots team members, competed at "Motorama Robot Conflict" in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania over the President's day weekend. Competitors came from across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico including students from MIT, WPI, Georgia Tech, professional engineers, and family hobbyists as well as several teams who are known for fighting 250lb robots on the Battlebots television show. Emmet and Adam each competed with their custom 3lb robots, and Adam also entered his recently completed "featherweight" 30lb robot called Twister. Twister showed incredible durability in the competition and delivered a significant punch with it's 5lb, 193mph spinning under-cutter disk.

Adam was recognized for his design of Twister and persistence in rebuilding that robot again and again, returning to the battle box even after brutal competitions. He showed great potential as one of the youngest designers/builders and was honored with the "Up and Coming" special award for Twister. He received prizes valued at over $250. Great job Adam and Emmet!
