1. Academics Spotlight
On Friday, AP Capstone Seminar presented their team solutions to real-world problems. Presentations explored the solutions to the Central African Food Shortage as well as Systemic Issues in Inefficient Government. Congratulations to these stellar students for completing their first AP Seminar performance task!
2. Athletics Spotlight
Baseball beat South 3-1 and San Pedro 4-2.

Softball beat San Pedro 3-2 and Banning 9-0.

Boys Lacrosse beat Los Alamitos 19-12 and Mira Costa 19-5.

Girls Lacrosse beat Agoura 15-5 and rivals Peninsula 17-2.

Boys Volleyball lost to El Segundo 3-2 but beat El Camino Real 2-0.

Boys and Girls Swim beat South 98-70 and 108-62 at the first home meet of the year on Friday.

Track and Field hosted the annual PV Invitational and won in the Girls 4x400 and the Distance Medley Relay.
3. French Spotlight
French 1 celebrated Mardi Gras this week and learned lots of facts about how we celebrate Carnaval throughout the French-speaking world. Of course a Mardi Gras celebration wouldn’t be complete without king cake! Students made masks, ate traditional cake, and learned about celebrations in a different culture. Thank you Mrs. Byrne for providing this opportunity for our students!
4. Music Spotlight
The Music Department had their annual Honors Music Recital this past week. Some of the performers featured included Claudia Lee who played in the All-State Band Concert on Sunday and performed an oboe solo at the recital on Wednesday. The senior jazz band kids, along with guest artist Alexa Lampe from the drama department did an amazing combination during the second half. Ra’nya Crowder and her friend Leilani Fonoimoana sang Roxanne, by popular internet artist, Arizona Zervas. Congratulations to all of our amazing students who performed!
5. Song Team Spotlight
Our Song team went to West Coast Elite‘s regional dance competition in Santa Clarita, CA at Saugus High School on February 22, 2020. They showed their love and support after the tragedy that occurred in November. 2019 at Saugus HS by purchasing t-shirts in their school colors that read “We dance with you #SaugusStrong.”

Our soloists Chen Filler (12), Maleha Innocent (11), and Lauren Kim (10) placed Top 10 in their grade levels. Varsity Pom won 1st place. JV Pom won 2nd place. Some of JV and Varsity combined for a Medium Jazz piece. Lauren Kim and Chen Filler choreographed their own duet that placed 2nd! They also went to a WCE regional dance competition on 2/1/2020 in Glendale, CA at Glendale HS and did an amazing job as well!!

6. Journalism Spotlight
The latest issue of the student produced and run newspaper The Point was released this past week. This issue focuses on the California primaries. Other stand out articles include:
  • Remember the Tritons Walk by Fin Kehrli
  • Project Runway by Lucia Ruiz
  • PV Bond Measure by Ella Dorst
  • Science Fair feature
  • Love is Love: a timeline of important events and information about the LGBTQIA+ community and the terms that students may not be familiar with
  • Opinion on classic literature becoming outdated by Kaylie Harley
  • Opinion on the new XFL by Ethan King
  • Spring sports preview by Jake Brusick
  • CIF Winter sports recap by Nikki Ringer

7. Photography Spotlight
Last week PVHS photo students visited Otis Art College, Venice Canals, and Venice Beach. The students had many opportunities to practice their photo skills in a real world situations. It was a great day at the beach. 
This week PVHS's Jazz musicians performed in photo class during studio time. This experience is one part of the Art Department's goal to incorporate cross-disciplinary student collaboration this semester. 
8. Black Student Union Spotlight
As February comes to a close, our Black Student Union hosted another event in honor of Black History Month. In the main hallway on campus was posted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s infamous "I Have a Dream" speech. All around the poster students were encouraged to write what their dream was. Even Dr. Tyner participated in sharing his dream of happiness for everyone.
9. Student Spotlight
The Math Honor Society traveled to Santa Monica High School this week to compete in Bay Math League, a math competition involving about a dozen South Bay high schools. Students competed individually and in a team round with several hundred other math-loving students. 

Congratulations to junior Curtis Liu and freshman Eugene Lee for their perfect scores, and special thanks to Mrs. Maemoto for chaperoning the team. If you would like to join the fun and challenge of math competitions, come to Math Club meetings on Tue & Thur at lunch in room 514.

  • Staff appreciation week starts today! Thank you so much to our PTSA for sponsoring this week long event!
  • The PVHS campus has been selected as a voting center by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's office for the upcoming election on March 3, 2020. On Monday 3/2 and Tuesday 3/3 students and staff will not be allowed to park along the Cloyden Road entrance/driveway so that voters can park. Please plan accordingly to allow additional time for parking, pick up, and drop off due to increased traffic and activity near the school during this time.
