Dallas City Council Member Adam Bazaldua issues statement on MLK Center

“I was made aware of rumors spreading in the community that the city is planning on closing the Martin Luther King Jr. Center. I can reassure you that there have been no conversations from City staff to that effect. I have spoken with City Manager, T.C. Broadnax, and confirmed that the allegations are false. The MLK center is a vital part of the South Dallas Community. It provides essential services and consist of a library, recreation center, childcare, senior center, health care clinic, and vital programming and meeting space for residents. Just this month, the Dallas City Council approved a lease amendment with Foremost Family Health Center, a tenant of MLK Center, that would allow them to accept grants for facility improvements and renovations.

We will continue to keep residents informed of any changes coming to the center. If you have any questions, please contact my office at 214-671-8919.”

OPEN MODEL AND TALENT CALL FOR AGES 16-50 AT MARK CUBAN HEROES BASKETBALL CENTER

For the fifth year, the Center will host auditions for models, actors, singers and dancers ages 16-50; registration is free and will be held from 10:30-11 a.m. with auditions from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Most people assume the Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center might focus on sports, but its mission is to help young people find success in a variety of ways. This Saturday (Jan. 28), the Center will host an Open Model and Talent Call for models, actors, singers and dancers ages 16-50. Free and open to the public, registration is from 10:30-11 a.m. with live auditions from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

This program began in 2018 and has helped launch the modeling and entertainment careers of numerous North Texans. For example, 22-year-old Osayande Foster, a successful model with Kim Dawson and several other national agencies, is currently shooting a Nike ad. A Kim Dawson model is making thousands of dollars per shoot and another model is working with singer Gwen Stefani.

The call is hosted by Dallas-based Willie Johnson of J3 Productions, a fashion show production and modeling management company whose mission is “to find the diamond in the rough and make him or her shine.”

The chosen individuals will spend six weeks working with Johnson and will receive professional head shots and other support. J3 Production will serve as the mother agency, and Johnson introduces the individuals to other regional and national agencies.

REQUIREMENTS: Female models should be 5’7”-6’, and male models should be 5’11”-6’3”. Singers and dancers should bring music on a flash drive. Singers may be asked to sing for 30 seconds, and dancers may be asked to perform a 45-second routine. Actors may be asked to do a cold read.

Black Love Day Set for Feb. 13

The African American Holiday Association said the annual Black Love Day will take place on Feb. 13 with the theme of “Black Love Heals 365.”

Black Love Day, the brainchild of D.C. resident Ayo Handy-Kendi, was conceived from a spiritual inspiration in 1993 in the District amid the crack cocaine crisis that caused havoc in many cities.

The day is designed to encourage the use of love as a higher vibration and re-connection solution to heal relationships, increase peace and stop violence, as Black and white communities are experiencing a resurgence of unrest in their communities due to the fentanyl epidemic, fears of white supremacy/racism terrorism, coronavirus isolation, economic and climate disaster anxiety, the association said.

Additionally, mental health will serve as one of the sub-themes this year.

Handy-Kendi wrote a book, “Black Love,” on the subject.

Dallas City Council approves amendments to  promote economic equity

The Dallas City Council unanimously approved an amended City of Dallas Economic Development Policy and approved a new Economic Development Incentive Policy to proactively address economic inequalities and outcomes in historically underserved communities through policy, public investment and partnership.

“This Economic Policy has been years in the making, but today we finally have our north star,” said Councilmember Tennell Atkins, Chairman of the City’s Economic Development Committee. “This Economic Development Policy is an overarching, strategic plan that is right in line with the City’s Racial Equity Plan and gives us specific goals and practices to address the economic disparities that have plagued southern Dallas for far too long.”

My Truth: I am traumatized

By Cheryl Smith

Oftentimes when I see or read of people who say they  can’t watch certain movies about the peculiar institution of slavery I have usually responded, “at least you didn’t  have to live through it.” For me, everyone needs to see what slavery was about. Unfortunately, however, there  are legislators who don’t want those stories shown or told. I totally understand because I wouldn’t want anyone to know if my people were part of some of the most savage and inhumane acts ever.
