Introducing Dr. Douglas Wiebe

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Douglas Wiebe, director of the University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center, is joining our Executive Committee as the associate director of the Outreach & Engagement Core. Dr. Wiebe joins the center from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a professor of Epidemiology, and served as the director of the Penn Injury Science Center since 2017. He currently leads the Ivy League - Big Ten Epidemiology of Concussion Study, a multi-institutional research effort designed to understand sport-related concussion and head injuries.

DEIJ In Action

The U-M Concussion Center values diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) and has placed these values at the center of all we do. Each quarter, we highlight our members' work that helps foster an inclusive community where we continue to maximize individual and societal health.

Race and SES White Paper

The center published a white paper highlighting how different social determinants of health, such as race and socioeconomic status, impact concussion prevention and management.

Marygrove Block Party

The center joined more than 40 community partners at the Marygrove Conservancy Block Party on Saturday, 8/13, to assist in handing out safety equipment and educational resources.

BIAMI Fall Conference

Director Dr. Steve Broglio and faculty members Drs. James Eckner, David Millward, Katherine Seagly, and Srijan Sen will be presenters during the BIAMI virtual conference in September.

Smith Speaker Series Event

Dr. Doug Smith (University of Pennsylvania) will join us on Thursday, 9/29, from 4-5pm for the presentation "Tackling the Mechanisms and Aftermath of Concussion."

Faculty Spotlight: Hala Darwish

Dr. Hala Darwish is an associate professor at University of Michigan's School of Nursing and the school's first neuroscience scholar. She leads research into the biological, social, behavioral, and environmental factors that lead to impairments in cognitive function.

Concussion Symptom Groupings

Center members studied how a standardized assessment, Sport Concussion Assessment Tool-5th edition (SCAT-5), can be grouped by distinct "factors" based on distinct concussion symptoms, facilitating more personalized care.

TRACK-TBI Study

Center faculty member Dr. Fred Korley led an observational cohort study under the international Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in Traumatic Brain Injury (TRACK-TBI) research initiative examining the association between blood-biomarkers GFAP and UCH-L1 and all-cause mortality following a traumatic brain injury.

NFL Guardian Cap

National Football League players began wearing guardian caps this preseason. This soft-shell padded covering goes on the outside of the helmet and absorbs a majority of a collision.

World Cup Concussion Technology

A virtual reality headset that tracks head and eye movements to help facilitate a safe return-to-play will be part of the most extensive set of concussion protocols at November's FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
