Cornell Elves Backpack Program

The Backpack Program is back for its seventeenth year and will be supporting 33 schools!

The program donates new, filled backpacks to the neediest children in grades kindergarten to sixth grade. The items that complete the backpacks are standard and can be found on the Elves web page. Typically, a newly filled backpack can cost between $20-$25.

How can you help?

  • Donate supplies: Did your office buy too many pencils or notebooks this year? Do you have extra glue sticks? The program can get these items to classrooms where they will be used.

  • Write a check: Don’t like to shop? No problem. The elves know how to stretch a dollar and get what kids need most.  Any amount will make a difference to a needy local child! Checks can be made to “The Elves” and sent to Bill Alberta, 751 Elm Street Extension, Ithaca, NY14850.

You also have the option of donating a backpack to a particular school or making a general donation that will be given to one of the schools on our list that is most in need. If you want to donate to a particular school, please contact the leader for that school, found on the website.

Backpacks and supplies will be collected in the East Hill Office Building atrium, Wednesdays - Fridays through August 18 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Caregiver Support & Education Network Meeting: Focus on Caregiver Nutrition

Thursday, August 10, 2023, 12:00 PM

Are you providing care for an adult family member, spouse, or friend, either locally or long distance? Perhaps the one you care for is living in a facility, independently in their own home, or in your home.  If so, you are invited to attend meetings of the Caregiver Support & Education Network (CSEN).

The August CSEN meeting will focus on a piece of self-care – healthy nutrition for the caregiver. Whether it is on a regular basis or during moments of crisis, being sure to fuel and hydrate your body is essential to health. Listen in on a conversation between Ruth Merle-Doyle from the Work/Life team and Derek Fiacco, Nutrition and Health Outreach Specialist from Cornell Wellness, to learn tangible nutrition tips for many caregiving situations. There will be plenty of time to address your nutrition/food-related questions as well so bring them, along. We welcome all to this conversation, whether you are currently or not currently caregiving.

Meetings will be held via Zoom until further notice.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers Needed for Women Swimmin'

Volunteers are needed for the 20th Annual Women Swimmin' for Hospicare. Help is needed at Cass Park or at the Ithaca Yacht Club on Saturday, August 12.  Hospicare relies on 200+ volunteers to ensure the safety of 300+ swimmers.

On Swim Day, buses will transport swimmers from Cass Park to Bolton Point, where they will get in the water and swim across the lake to the Ithaca Yacht Club (IYC). The swim will conclude with a celebration of everyone's efforts at IYC!  Various volunteer opportunities are available.

All money raised by Women Swimmin’ goes directly toward patient services at Hospicare, including subsidies for patients without means to cover the cost of their care, and bereavement services for those in our community dealing with loss (regardless of if their loved one died in hospice services or not).

For more information, please visit the event web page.

Help Build a Mobility Device

A team of entrepreneurs and Cornell engineers is developing a new mobility assistive device for people who cannot get out of bed and do their hygienic routines without assistance.

They are looking for people with mobility difficulties and their caregivers for a short interview to better understand the needs of people and make their devices a better solution. You can help to create a mobility device that makes people with mobility problems more independent and reduces the burden on caregivers.

Expected contribution: a 15-20 min interview during which you will be asked questions about your current patient transfer routine and related problems.

To schedule a meeting, please visit the calendar link. For more information please send a text message “Device” to Alexander at 339-213-9620, visit www.revimo.org, or send an email to [email protected].
