U.S. Department of Education Announces Eight Finalists From California

Congratulations to the 8 finalists from California! The U.S. Department of Education announced 95 finalists in the reTHINK Adult Education Challenge, a $750,000 competition to advance pre-apprenticeships. Of the 95 finalists, 8 are from California. The adult education providers are invited to join Stage 2 and compete for $750,000 in prizes. The finalists hail from 32 states and two territories, and include higher education institutions, local educational agencies, community and faith-based organizations, and correctional facilities. The agencies representing California are: Charles A. Jones Career and Education Center (CAJ) Los Angeles Southwest College/ LA Community College District Mt. San Antonio College Oakland Adult and Career Education (OACE) Proteus, Inc. Roseville Adult School Tamalpais Adult School Vallejo City Unified School District- Regional Education Center Check out the full list of finalists and more.

Governor’s Proposed Budget for 2021-22 Summary and Link

Governor Newsom's proposed budget for 2021-22 was released on Friday, January 8th. In the proposed budget is an $8.1M increase to the CAEP consortia allocation. Additionally, there is $1 million in ongoing Prop 98 General Fund to provide Adult Education Program technical assistance. CAEP will release the 2021-22 Preliminary CAEP Allocation Schedule by the end of February as part of the CFAD certification process due on May 2, 2021. Hanover Research – Preventing Student Dropout Toolkit

In this publication, Hanover Research addresses how institutions can take the initiative in helping address common areas that lead students to drop out by addressing how to best support students in the classroom, provide adequate financial assistance, and emotionally engage students. The toolkit provides solutions to address three areas of student support: academic, financial and student engagement. Although this toolkit addresses solutions for colleges – the strategies can be adopted in adult education. Download the report to learn more.

PPIC - Improving College Readiness through Dual Enrollment

In the latest PPIC article, the need for dual enrollment to target underserved communities is addressed. PPIC demonstrates how awareness of dual enrollment was growing prior to the pandemic and how it is an important strategy for expanding educational opportunities and improving student outcomes in this pandemic-induced recession. Preparing Students to be Workforce Ready in the Digital Economy

Join the Bay Area Community College Consortium (BACCC), Canada College, representatives from Microsoft, and more during a virtual event, hosted by the Milken Institute, designed to present an overview of tools, content and training to prepare students to be workforce ready in the digital economy. The Milken Institute will facilitate the conversation including industry leaders, faculty, and students in discussing how the workplace is evolving and what skills are most crucial to short-term and long-term employability.
