THE U.S. LABOR REPORT for the month of December will be released on Jan. 7. The latest data show U.S. businesses continue to struggle to find workers and the tight labor market hasn’t eased. While Covid-19 still presents a risk to the economy, greater-than-anticipated inflation has pushed interest-rate projections significantly higher across the forecast horizon.
Consumer price data for France, Italy, Germany and the consolidated Eurozone will be announced during the week. The numbers are expected to paint a worrying picture as energy prices reach record highs. The ECB’s projections for inflation were significantly boosted last month. Price growth is now seen at 3.2% next year and 1.8% both in 2023 and 2024, with President Christine Lagarde acknowledging that there are possibly some upside risks to this outlook.
Members of OPEC+, a 23-nation group led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, meet on Jan. 4 to to assess policy heading into 2022. Before that gathering, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said the country is comfortable with prices between $65 and $80 a barrel. Crude futures have almost recovered all the ground lost since the end of November when the discovery of the omicron variant sent markets reeling.
