Stand for Canada

The City of Brampton has launched a Stand for Canada procurement policy, strengthening our commitment to protecting Canadian businesses in response to U.S. tariffs by: 


  • Re-evaluating procurement contracts and restricting American-based companies from future opportunities while tariffs remain. 
  • Engaging municipalities, businesses and residents across the country to adopt a Made in Canada approach. 
  • Investing in our local businesses and workers to enhance economic resilience, drive innovation, and build a stronger future for Canada.

Introducing the Mayor’s Tariff Task Force 


The City of Brampton launched the Mayor’s Tariff Task Force to support ongoing efforts and plans to strengthen and diversify Brampton’s trade relationships, with a focus on: 


  • City-to-city engagement: Strengthening relationships with U.S. cities and businesses that support free and fair trade.
  • Business outreach: Working directly with U.S. companies operating in Brampton and creating new opportunities for local businesses.
  • Diversifying global trade: Reducing reliance on U.S. markets by advocating for stronger international partnerships and interprovincial trade.

Announcements

On March 6, 2025, the U.S. Administration announced a temporary suspension of tariffs on Canadian goods that comply with the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) until April 2

 

Additionally, the tariff on potash, a key ingredient in fertilizer, has been reduced from 25% to 10%.


On March 5, 2025, the U.S. Administration announced a one-month exemption on automakers who comply with CUSMA. 


This announcement follows the March 4, 2025, decision, in which the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian exports and a 10% tariff on energy products. Furthermore, a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum is still set to take effect on March 12, 2025. 

Canada Announces Counter-Tariffs and Retaliatory Measures in Response to U.S. Tariffs 

In response to U.S. Tariffs imposed on March 4, 2025,  the Government of Canada announced 25% counter-tariffs on $155 billion of U.S. goods.

On March 4, 2025, The Province of Ontario also announced retaliatory measures, including removing U.S. products from LCBO shelves, a province-wide procurement ban on U.S. companies, and a proposed 25% tariff on electricity exports to the U.S. Watch the press conference here.

The Government of Canada is seeking views from business, stakeholders, and Canadians regarding the impacts of the application of tariffs on goods:


Notice of Intent to Impose Countermeasures in Response to United States Tariffs on Canadian Goods 


The Government of Canada has issued a notice of intent to implement a second round of tariffs, additional counter-tariffs of $125 billion, subject to a 21-day comment period prior to implementation. Submit your input below:
