Clay County Showcase: Introducing Mobile Sim to a New Partner in Rural Health Care

The Clay County Showcase marked an exciting step forward in expanding simulation-based education to new partners within the Alabama Rural Health Collaborative (ARHC). As a new member of ARHC, Clay County Hospital welcomed the UAB Mobile Simulation team this winter to introduce how simulation can enhance clinical training, patient safety and provider confidence in rural health-care settings.

Pediatric Airway Emergency Sim Offers Hands-On Training for High Stakes Situations

The UAB Mobile Simulation Team, in collaboration with UAB St. Vincent’s St. Clair Hospital, hosted a pediatric airway emergency simulation to prepare providers for high-risk respiratory scenarios. The session focused on managing a child experiencing laryngospasm that progressed into Pulseless Electrical Activity (PEA).

A diverse group of 12 participants—nine RNs, 2 MDAs and 1 PCT—engaged in intensive airway management, intubation, crisis response and team communication exercises. The simulation provided an immersive, real-world experience that allowed learners to refine their skills in a controlled, supportive environment.

PICC Line Training Offers Personalized Interactive Learning

On Jan. 16, the UAB Mobile Simulation Team, in collaboration with Russell Medical Center in Alexander City, conducted a specialized PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) line insertion simulation training. This highly focused session provided a single dedicated learner with four hours of personalized instruction, ensuring in-depth skill development and confidence-building.

The training was designed to support the implementation of Russell’s new PICC insertion policy, checklist and equipment. The hands-on session covered sterile techniques, proper insertion procedures, safety protocols and troubleshooting methods, equipping the participant with essential skills for successful PICC line placement and management.

Strengthening Mobile Sim Through Old, New & Established Partnerships

As mobile simulation continues to evolve, so does its role in enhancing obstetric emergency preparedness and broader health-care training. During my recent speaking engagement at the Virtual Obstetric Life Support Conference (OBLS), I had the opportunity to share insights on how mobile simulation is shaping team-based learning, emergency response and clinical decision-making—particularly in rural and underserved areas.

This event served as a reminder of the power of partnerships—old, new and established—in advancing simulation-based education. Long-standing collaborations continue to drive innovative training solutions, while new connections open doors for expanding our reach.

Looking ahead, we are excited to build on these relationships, explore new opportunities and expand the impact of mobile simulation in obstetric and critical care training. The momentum from OBLS and our recent engagements emphasize the growing recognition of simulation’s role in improving patient outcomes, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.
