Simulation Saves Lives at Russell Medical Center

When Allyson Garrett stepped into her role as education and employee health nurse at Russell Medical Center in Alexander City in 2022, she was eager to find new ways to prepare her team for the realities of patient care. That’s when her director introduced her to UAB’s Mobile Simulation program.

Practice Makes Prepared: RCDP at Lakeland

When faced with cardiac arrest, there’s no time for hesitation. Each team member must know their role, respond with confidence and act in sync.

That’s why on April 7, UAB Mobile Simulation partnered with Lakeland Community Hospital to host an immersive Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice (RCDP) session—a training approach that emphasizes repetition and real-time feedback until each critical skill becomes second nature.

During the simulation, participants worked through the essential steps of a Code Blue response.

When Every Moment Matters: OB Simulations at UAB St. Vincent's

In obstetrics, emergencies can unfold in seconds. Two of the most high-stakes scenarios—postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and precipitous delivery—were the focus of recent simulations conducted by the UAB Mobile Simulation team at UAB St. Vincent’s hospitals.

To bring realism to the training, the team partnered with a standardized patient (SP) who portrayed a laboring mother. This human element added nuance and urgency, giving providers the chance to practice not only clinical response but also compassionate communication under stress.

Partnership in Action

One of the most rewarding parts of Mobile Simulation is watching people grow. Take Allyson Garrett, education and employee health nurse at Russell Medical Center. When she first partnered with us in 2022, staff were hesitant—many only knew simulation as a graded experience from nursing school.

Together, Allyson and our team built trust through needs assessments, hands-on practice and open conversations. Now, staff not only buy in, but they’re the ones reassuring new team members: “You’re not being graded—this is about learning.” That culture shift has already led to real-world wins, from launching a PICC line program to saving a mother and baby during a placental abruption.

Stories like Allyson’s show the power of partnership. As Mobile Simulation continues to travel across Alabama, I want to hear your ideas—what skills your team needs, what scenarios keep you up at night and how we can train together.

With every stop, we’re not just running a simulation; we’re building confidence, strengthening teams and improving patient outcomes. Let’s keep driving forward, together.
