"How America Criminalizes Black Youth" Book Talk 1/17

Join the CFCC and CCJR on Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. for a conversation with Kristin Henning, author of the 2021 book, The Rage of Innocence: How America Criminalizes Black Youth.

In her book, Henning -- Blume Professor of Law and director of the Juvenile Justice Clinic and Initiative at Georgetown Law Center -- describes the double standard with which society judges the behavior of white and Black adolescents. What is typically dismissed as normal teenage experimentation and healthy risk-taking by white youth is much more likely to result in criminal charges and incarceration for Black youth, with far-reaching consequences.

The discussion will take place in the 12th Floor Reading Room, and a reception will follow. Please register in advance.

The UBalt Campus Pantry is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m., or by appointment (email pantry@ubalt.edu to schedule). The pantry has food, supplies and other resources for the campus community.

Welcome, New Staff Members!

Several new employees have joined the law school recently. Rhonda Stokes joined us in November 2022 as director of enrollment and planning. Her previous role was registrar at Stevenson University, and she worked at UBalt from 2009-2016 as an undergraduate academic advisor. Her office is in the Dean's Suite.

This week, we welcome three new employees. Cordell L. Grant joins as assistant director for judicial clerkships and diversity programs in LCDO. Cordell is a 2018 graduate of the UBalt School of Law and most recently was a senior law clerk at the Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City. Cordell will assist with management of the 1L EXPLOR program and oversee the judicial clerkship and internship application processes. He also will serve as liaison to student affinity groups and promote diversity pipeline programs.

At the front desk in the Dean's Suite, say hello to Shea Roodberg and Jasmine Carter. Shea is an academic affairs specialist in the Office of Academic Affairs. She will support student organizations and OAA administrative responsibilities, such as exam administration, and greet students visiting the Dean's Suite. Jasmine is an administrative assistant helping manage the Dean's Suite and supporting our many adjunct professors. Please welcome them all to the law school!

1/18 Event: 'A Butterfly in COVID' Article Release Party and Panel

Join the Maryland Carey Law Review on Wednesday, Jan. 18 for an article release event for the recently published work, “A Butterfly in COVID: Structural Racism and Baltimore’s Pretrial Legal System.” The panel comprises article co-authors Prof. Doug Colbert, professor of law at Maryland Carey Law, and Prof. Colin Starger, associate dean for academic affairs and director of the Legal Data and Design Clinic at UBalt Law, as well as Dr. Lawrence T. Brown, the Morgan State University scholar who coined the term “Black butterfly.”

The panel will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Maryland Carey Law’s Ceremonial Courtroom, with a reception to follow. Register to attend in person or register to participate virtually via Zoom.

Maryland Legal Aid Summer Jobs & 2D/3E Fellowships Information Session

Thursday, Jan. 12, 5 - 6 p.m. Register to learn location.

Join Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) to learn about Summer opportunities for all law students and the 2D/3E UB Public Interest & Housing Justice Fellowships.

Through a partnership with UB, MLA offers one Public Interest Fellowship, and one Housing Justice Fellowship to 2D or 3E UB Law students. The recipients of these fellowships will receive a paid law clerk position for the 2023 summer. After a successful summer, the recipients may receive an offer for post-graduate employment and a waiver of one year of tuition and fees for committing to work at Maryland Legal Aid for at least three years following graduation.

Join MLA Director of HR for information on how students can get involved in MLA's important work through pro bono volunteering, law clerk positions, and fellowships! Current and past Fellows will also be in attendance to talk about their experience with the fellowship and answer questions!

Maryland Office of the Attorney General Summer Law Clerk Program Information Session

The Maryland Office of the Attorney General's summer law clerk program offers experience in range of practice areas and practice types including criminal investigations and prosecutions, securities and antitrust actions, environmental enforcement, civil litigation, appellate advocacy, and representation of the State of Maryland in virtually every legal arena.

Full-time law clerk positions are eligible for a Sondheim Fellowship and may be eligible for a UBSPI fellowship.

CARES Grants Available

The UBalt CARES & HEERF grants are provided by the U.S. Department of Education to support students who have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The maximum award amount for Spring 2023 is $1,500.
