As we welcome members of the Aggie community back to campus for 2019, we’re excited to share more outstanding research from our students.
Mackenzie Noon came to UC Davis in awe of how biology and computer science could together help combat diseases like malaria. His childhood background in computer programming inspired his desire to study genetics, an area known to generate large swaths of biological data. He works as an undergraduate researcher in the lab of Professor Ken Kaplan, who has helped
mentor and guide Noon’s research studying yeast to stop cancer
.
Our students are fortunate to work alongside some of the world’s top experts in the life sciences. It’s a hallmark of the UC Davis experience that drives leading-edge research and prepares them for successful careers.

Blending In: Grace Ha Investigates Camouflage in Seagrass Meadows
Morning fog hugs Horseshoe Cove, a wispy veil of gray masking the Pacific Ocean. As it rolls towards the beach by the Bodega Marine Laboratory, UC Davis students explore the cove’s tide pools, led by ecology graduate student Grace Ha.
A sea star engages in a slow motion life-or-death battle with a mussel, a bright yellow nudibranch traverses a kelp blade and a quarter-sized crab scurries among wet rocks.
“Camouflage is something children learn starting from a young age, and it’s an engrained part of how we think about ecology and evolution,” says Ha, noting that the idea of camouflage is really about predation.
