Fall 2026, Issue 1

Dear King Hall Community,

In 2023, UC Davis School of Law established a new center to examine the complex social and legal implications of innovation, science, and technology. The resulting Center for Innovation, Law, and Society (CILS) builds on the work of UC Davis School of Law faculty members examining fields as diverse as artificial intelligence (AI), bioethics, data privacy, environmental law, health law, intellectual property, and social media.

In so doing, the center takes advantage of UC Davis’s proximity to Silicon Valley and other major innovation hubs in Northern California as well as policymakers in the state’s capital. The center hosts leading speakers who share their insights on the legal challenges of new innovations and the role of law in shaping their development and social impact.

Since its founding three years ago, CILS has hosted over twenty events on a wide range of issues, including ethical AI, the politics of gene patent litigation, and the First Amendment implications of social media. Reflecting the center’s commitment to multidisciplinary inquiry, our speakers have come from a wide variety of fields, including computer science, economics, management, and science and technology studies. Additionally, the center has convened international conferences with Jindal Global Law School (India) and members of the European Parliament.

We invite you to join us in important public debates on the role of law in enhancing the social benefits of innovation.

Best regards,

Peter Lee

CILS Director and Distinguished Professor of Law
