Greetings,

We are delighted to share our first edition of the UC Davis Eye Center Alumni e-Newsletter. It is our hope that this communication keeps us connected to the department and as an alumni community. If you have requests or suggestions for content in future editions, please let us hear your thoughts. We know everyone has much going on, so we will provide brief updates and the most relevant department news possible.

As always, we are grateful for your support and dedication to the “mothership” and look forward to being better connected. Many, many thanks and please be well and be safe.

Neil & MJ Kelly Presidential Endowed Chair

On September 17, the Eye Center celebrated the inaugural appointment of Paul Sieving, M.D., Ph.D. to the Neil and MJ Kelly Presidential Chair in Vitreoretinal Science, whose dedication and exceptional research will lead to tremendous advances in forms of regenerative medicine, allowing for the treatment or even reversal of debilitating eye diseases for which there were previously no cures.

It was an honor to recognize Neil and MJ Kelly for being the catalyst to what many may consider the most significant recruitment in the history of UC Davis. In recognition of their support and vision, we are pleased to share this video tribute: https://youtu.be/3oWjdxdP6Xc.

UC Davis Academic Federation Innovative Development Award

Alumna Parisa Emami, MD, MPH has been awarded the UC Davis Academic Federation Innovative Development Award. This grant will support Dr. Emami's research project on a novel ophthalmic imaging technology. In collaboration with the UC Davis School of Engineering faculty Dr. Iman Soltani, she seeks to breach barriers that hinder the use of ophthalmic imaging in most vulnerable patients and improve diagnosis and treatment of retinal pathologies. Dr. Emami is a vitreoretinal surgeon and director of the uveitis service at the UC Davis Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Science.

Seeing the Benefits of Collaboration

“It’s a two-way street,” said Dr. Sara Thomasy. “Humans benefit from what’s learned in animal trials, and animals benefit by what’s discovered in human medicine, like corneal surgical techniques routinely performed on humans that will advance vision restoration in animals. We’re truly going both directions with knowledge.”
