UC Davis Academic Federation Innovative Development Award
Alumna Parisa Emami, MD, MPH has been awarded the UC Davis Academic Federation Innovative Development Award. This grant will support Dr. Emami's research project on a novel ophthalmic imaging technology. In collaboration with the UC Davis School of Engineering faculty Dr. Iman Soltani, she seeks to breach barriers that hinder the use of ophthalmic imaging in most vulnerable patients and improve diagnosis and treatment of retinal pathologies. Dr. Emami is a vitreoretinal surgeon and director of the uveitis service at the UC Davis Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Science.
“It’s a two-way street,” said Dr. Sara Thomasy. “Humans benefit from what’s learned in animal trials, and animals benefit by what’s discovered in human medicine, like corneal surgical techniques routinely performed on humans that will advance vision restoration in animals. We’re truly going both directions with knowledge.”

UC Davis receives $3.2 million grant to study age-related macular degeneration
Dr. Glenn Yiu, an associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Science, has been awarded a five-year, $3.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, National Eye Institute for a study on age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. Dr. Yiu and his team will be looking at factors that may contribute to the development of AMD, including genetics, metabolism, and a Western-style diet high in fat and sugar. He will also be looking at whether high doses of statins — a class of lipid-lowering medications — can slow the progression of the disease.

Join UCD EYE RUN THIS TOWN
Join team UCD EYE RUN THIS TOWN for the annual Sacramento Food Bank Run To Feed The Hungry on November 25. As always, this is a great walk/run event that brings the entire Sacramento community together as well as our department.
Our team is comprised of walkers, runners, joggers and virtual runners. Strollers are allowed in the race; however our fur babies are not. There are 5K, 10K and virtual options.
