Sierra Biopharma is Developing Antigen-Specific Therapy Targeting Autoimmune Diseases
Sierra Biopharma, a biotechnology startup developed by UC Davis researchers, set an initial focus on treating myasthenia gravis, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects 1.4 million people globally. Myasthenia gravis causes use-induced muscle fatigue and generalized muscle weakness that can result in life-altering difficulties with seeing, swallowing, talking and walking. Sierra Biopharma is taking a new approach to treat the disease with an antigen-specific therapy that attacks the cause of the disease without suppressing the entire immune system. Sierra Biopharma is now scaling up production of the therapeutic biologic and plans to complete the proof of concept and preclinical work in the next six months. The company has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2020 Science2Startup showcase event — a forum for top scientists from around the world to present their ideas and interact with leading investors and executives in the Boston biotechnology hub. .... Wearable Device Assists People with Loss of Bladder Function
UC Davis researchers Eric Kurzrock ( Departments of Urologic Surgery and Pediatrics), Soheil Ghiasi ( Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering), and Lifeng Lai ( Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) are teaming up to develop an under-clothing biosensor that can recognize in real time when someone’s bladder is full. Those with neurogenic bladders, conditions in which bladder control is lost due to brain, spinal cord or neurologic problems, rely on a schedule rather than actual volume to empty their bladders. The noninvasive sensor will combine several sensing modalities, such as ultrasound, resonance sensing and light, to tell if a bladder is full or empty. ... Read More
Changes in Surface Sugarlike Molecules Help Cancer Metastasize
A research team led by Carlito Lebrilla, a professor of the UC Davis Department of Chemistry, worked with cells derived from a human cholangiocarcinoma, or bile duct cancer. Their research shows that changes in a specific type of sugarlike molecule, or glycan, on the surface of cancer cells help them to spread into other tissues. These findings could lead to diagnostic tests and new therapies to slow or stop the spread of cancers.... Read More
