Christian Fons-Rosen named to Ruiz Family Chair in Entrepreneurship
|

Congratulations to Christian Fons-Rosen on being appointed to the Ruiz Family Chair in Entrepreneurship! Fons-Rosen is an Associate Professor of Economics at UC Merced, and a Research Fellow at MPI Munich and CEPR. His areas of interest include the economics of science and innovation, firm productivity, and labor. Before joining UC Merced , he was an Associate Professor at Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona). He has held visiting positions at UC San Diego and LMU Munich.

Self-Supporting Graduate Professional Degree Program

Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Analytics
A new undergraduate major in Data Science and Analytics proposal is currently being finalized for a targeted submission very early in the spring 2023 semester. The document has been shared informally across campus to solicit input and feedback with many improvements made. The latest draft proposal of the DSA major can be found on the Gallo School Initiative page.

Gallo School Advisory Council Meeting - Fall 2022
The fall Gallo School Advisory Council meeting, held November 29, centered on the theme of growth in student enrollment and programs. Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education, Sarah Frey, and Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Education, Hrant Hratchian, discussed areas of growth and opportunity for UC Merced. In addition, the council heard about plans for a Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Analytics and about plans for potential accounting programs. Nurtured by Nature - Yosemite Veterans Education and Leadership Seminar
The Yosemite Veterans Education and Leadership Seminar provides an opportunity to help veterans understand what benefits are available to them to transfer the skills they developed in uniform to civilian life. The seminar is composed of talks and workshops facilitated by veterans and experts over a period of four days, during which participants stay in Yosemite and can find rejuvenation in the park. Prof. Andrew Shaver Awarded 2022 APSA Migration & Citizenship Section Best Article Prize
Political Science Professors Andrew Shaver of UC Merced and Yang-Yang Zhou of the University of British Columbia have been awarded the 2022 APSA Migration & Citizenship Section Best Article Prize for “Reexamining the Effect of Refugees on Civil Conflict: A Global Subnational Analysis.” The award was announced September 16, 2022 at the American Political Science Association's Annual Meeting & Exhibition.

The Division of Management and Information precedes the proposed Ernest and Julio Gallo School of Management at UC Merced, which if approved will combine the Departments of Cognitive and Information Sciences, Management and Business Economics, Management of Complex Systems, and Political Science with the goals of understanding and improving management of resources and institutions in nature and in society; promoting scholarship and teaching to understand and enhance the behavior, design, and performance of complex human and natural systems; studying and identifying practical implications for businesses, organizations, markets and governments by building knowledge of physical, cognitive, economic, political, and natural processes; and advancing human well-being, diversity, and equity while promoting sustainability of natural ecosystems
