Our first WAVES Village Closed Peer Support Group had its first session on September 23rd. The group of fifteen people included two co-facilitators, three facilitators-in-training, and ten WAVES Village volunteers from around the country.
During the 90-minute session, group members shared stories about the paths that led them to become active learners and volunteers in the mental health space. Members discussed their motivations and hopes for this group, which include seeking connections and support, personal learning and growth, and practicing skills to help others.
Members shared lived experiences with family relationship challenges, mental health conditions, the impact of their family-of-origin and more. The zoom room was filled with empathetic listening, affirmation and acceptance for everyone. All members felt strong connection, empowerment and gratitude. Two more sessions are planned on 10/21 and 11/11.
There are vast unmet needs for mental health support in our communities. The experience from running the current closed group will help us establish a solid foundation for future support groups as we’re continuing to engage, empower, connect more community members.
