WAVES Village

Closed Peer Support Group

Our first WAVES Village Closed Peer Support Group had its first session on September 23rd. The group of fifteen people included two co-facilitators, three facilitators-in-training, and ten WAVES Village volunteers from around the country.

During the 90-minute session, group members shared stories about the paths that led them to become active learners and volunteers in the mental health space. Members discussed their motivations and hopes for this group, which include seeking connections and support, personal learning and growth, and practicing skills to help others.

Members shared lived experiences with family relationship challenges, mental health conditions, the impact of their family-of-origin and more. The zoom room was filled with empathetic listening, affirmation and acceptance for everyone. All members felt strong connection, empowerment and gratitude. Two more sessions are planned on 10/21 and 11/11.

There are vast unmet needs for mental health support in our communities. The experience from running the current closed group will help us establish a solid foundation for future support groups as we’re continuing to engage, empower, connect more community members.

《'Oh no. Not again': How the UNC shooting reminded Asian Americans of a long history of violence》

WUNC | By Eli Chen

The UNC shooting triggered deep-seated anxiety and fear among Asian Americans in the Triangle.

In the days following the shooting, many Asian Americans in the Triangle were concerned about how people would perceive them and their family.

It also reminded people of the 1991 shooting at the University of Iowa, in which a Chinese graduate student killed several faculty members and a Chinese postdoctoral researcher before taking his own life. The tragedy sent shock waves to Chinese communities throughout the country. Today, thirty-two years later, mental health challenges among international students are still not getting enough attention and resources.
