August Newsletter

Dear ,

It's been a busy month across Canada as we've seen a flurry of celebrations of Ukrainian Independence Day across Canada in almost every major centre.  I was in Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 24, where for the first time ever our UCC Halifax Dartmouth branch organized a flag raising ceremony at Halifax City Hall.

We also had the successful 53rd edition of Canada's National Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin and we look forward to the  Festival Ukrainien de Montreal (Sept 7-9) and the  Bloor West Village Toronto Ukrainian Festival (Sept 14-16).

Just a week ago the World Forum of Ukrainian Saturday Schools took place in Lviv, Ukraine.  I'm happy to let you know that seven educators from Canada took part and made presentations which were very well received.  Next month we'll have a full report from Oksana Levytska, chair of UCC's Education Council.  She reminded me that our Ukrainian Canadian community has a lot to offer Ukrainian diaspora communities around the world in terms of the experience, materials and systematic approach developed here over many years.

UCC continues to press the Canadian government to enact stronger sanctions on Russian officials involved in the Oleh Sentsov case and in the cases of other Ukrainian political prisoners.  We need your help to reach out to all Members of Parliament to let them know that there is widespread support for strong sanctions on Russian human rights violators.   Please click below my signature to see our new postcards, which provide information on the current situation.
