May 2019 Canadian Newsletter

Dear  ,

I hope that you've had a great Easter celebration whichever calendar you follow! Thank you to everyone who has generously supported our Pysanka campaign, ensuring that the UCC Charitable & Education Trust continues to support many worthy programs.

Looking at our social media channels over the Easter week there were literally thousands of people sharing their pysanky, paska and Easter baskets with pride.  One of my favourite childhood memories was spending the day with my grandparents making paska. Dido, a baker, supervised the dough taking shape in the gigantic mixing bowls, while Baba set out enough baking tins to ensure that no friends, neighbour, or priest would go without!  I was inspired to try to make paska a few times this year (note: check expiration date on yeast!) and spent Good Friday singing the beautiful Jerusalem Matins with my choir in Ottawa.

Ukraine's Presidential Election has provided much to talk about over the dinner table. The exemplary work of Canada's elections observation team ensured that we had quick and insightful information on the free and fair electoral process.  This is also an election year in Canada, and UCC recently launched our Community Policy Survey in order to hear your views on new areas where we are developing policy. This includes thinking about the needs of youth, seniors, newcomers and artists. We've had a very positive response, and so have decided to keep the survey open for another week until May 10. If you haven't yet shared your views click HERE .

In a few weeks we will celebrate Vyshyvanka Day, a special time to showcase our Ukrainian arts and culture. UCC is proud to be partnering on the Vyshyvanka Canada 2019 initiative. There is more information below on how you can participate individually and in your community.

Finally, as many Canadians continue to face cold weather and rising flood waters, we all look forward to a better and warmer May for everyone. In Ukrainian the month is named травень ( traven') reflecting the lush green grass which should be growing at this time of year.

Christ is Risen! Truly he is Risen!

1926 Census of Prairie Provinces fully  digitized

Since 1871, a Canada-wide census has been held every 10 years. However, the population of the Prairie provinces was rapidly expanding, so there was a need for more frequent population counts in those provinces. It was decided to conduct a census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta in June 1906 (in between the Canada-wide censuses), and every 10 years thereafter.

Statistics Canada has transferred the 1926 Census of Prairie Provinces, which contains over 45,000 pages, to Library and Archives Canada. The records are fully searchable and indexed so Canadians can find the material easily!
