Green Action Fund (GAF) Update
Green Action Fund (GAF) Special Election Petition ***Urgent Call to Action***
  • The Green Action Fee was disqualified in the Student Government Association General Election in March 2023 over miscommunications on how and where to campaign as a student organization sponsoring a referendum.
  • Student Government is holding an emergency meeting in the coming days to vote on a bill allowing GAF to collect student signatures on a petition to call for a special election. They have permitted GAF to start collecting signatures before they vote on the bill.
  • GAF must collect approximately 1,100 student signatures by Thursday, April 20, at 3 pm. Please help us collect these signatures by sharing the link with other students and making announcements in your classes and course shells with your professor's permission.
  • Students can sign and share the petition via this link: https://sgaelection.uccs.edu/login.php?petition=true.
Green Action Fund (GAF) Mission: To create a sustainable campus by funding projects that reduce UCCS' ecological footprint and promote sustainable environmental, social, and economic values.

Students, faculty, and staff can apply for funding for their sustainability project on a rolling basis throughout the semester. All you need is an idea to get started. Contact GAF's Grant Coordinator, Kayla Williams, at st-sus01@uccs.edu.

Office of Sustainability Update
Major Projects
  • Hiring an Assistant Director of Sustainability: This position will focus on making our buildings and grounds more sustainable. The priority date to apply has passed, and the search committee is currently reviewing applications.
  • Hiring a Sustainability Program Director Professional. This position will focus on developing behavior management programs and organizing sustainability learning communities. The position title changed due to budget constraints. The position is on hold until campus leadership can evaluate the university budget in May.
  • Finalizing energy performance contract: Campus and system leadership is finalizing a three-year, 15-million-dollar investment in energy and water conservation measures that collectively pay for themselves over 20 years.
  • Behavior Management Pilot Program: As part of the energy performance contract, we are working with the Colorado State University's Institute for the Built Environment on a pilot program that encourages students in three residence halls to take shorter showers and conserve water and energy during the month of April. During the first week of the program, 11 students pledged to cut their shower times. We hope student participation will pick up as awareness grows about the program.
  • New rubber shingles were installed on the Sustainability Demonstration House. These shingles are much more durable than traditional asphalt shingles. They are Class 4 hail resistant, 150 mph wind-resistant, and Class A fire-resistant. The Office hopes to have a return on investment after the first major hailstorm. You are welcome to come on by and check them out.
