“Learning From Our Ancestors”
On All Souls or All Saints Day, we remember our ancestors. Spiritual growth and maturity require both honesty and appreciation as we reflect on the lives of those who have come before us. What can we learn from the mistakes and triumphs of the past? Can we recognize the sinner and the saint in each of us as we recognize the worth and dignity of those we’ve loved and lost?
Howard Levy, UCE favorite and accomplished musician, will be our musical guest.
We encourage you to submit your joys and sorrows ahead of time to this online form. We will read aloud in the service, those that are submitted by 11 am on Sunday. If you are unable to access the google form for some reason, you may send an email to Rev. Eileen Wiviott at ewiviott@ucevanston.org, however, it is easier for us to keep track through the google form. We continue to celebrate and mourn together through this important ritual and appreciate your understanding as we explore the various ways to hold what is on your hearts.
This Sunday's shared offering recipient is the Brennan Center. Your offering can be given through Text-to-Give, online, or mailed to the office with "Shared Offering" in the memo line.

An Important Covid Update
For the last several months our region of Illinois has been in Phase IV of Governor Pritzker's Illinois Plan. However, with the recent and significant spike of cases of COVID19 affecting the state, we have gone back down to Phase III, which means we can only accommodate up to 25 persons or 25% of space occupancy, whichever is less.
Fortunately, UCE has been operating under much stricter guidelines than Phase IV allowed so we are not needing to pull back but maintain the guidelines already established in June. Our Covid Response Team has reviewed those guidelines and made slight clarifications, which you can find here.
As we move toward the winter months, knowing that outdoor gatherings will be less likely, the staff, board and leaders of UCE, remain committed to holding everyone’s wellbeing as our highest priority.

From Kathy Underwood, Director of Congregational Life

October has been a busy month considering that almost everything is being done virtually still. I hope you have been able to participate in some of the programs. If not, be sure to catch one in November!
We started the month with the Stuffies Sleepover at UCE and showed a video of our fun during the Animal Blessing worship service on October 4. In case you missed it, you can watch the video here. We just might have to make this an annual event!
We had our first successful Popcorn Theology Online program for 6th-8th grades, where 6 youth watched clips from the movie Life of Pi and shared their thoughts on spirit animals and anger.
The highlight of the month for many was the Halloween Campfire. About 30 people of all ages gathered on the South Lawn, roasted marshmallows, ate s’mores, and talked and laughed in person (and with masks on)...

UCE Bread Communion is November 22
Bread communion is one of four communion/communal services we celebrate as a congregation each year (water, bread, fire, flower). Since we can't be together this year to share the bread from our heritage, we would like to create new ways to break bread together.
Please consider participating in a virtual bread communion this year in one or all of these ways:
-
Recipes: submit a family favorite or traditional bread recipe to ewiviott@ucevanston.org by 11/18. Include your family name and a tidbit about the significance of this bread.
-
Family Bread Photo or Video: send in a photo or a short (20-30 second) video of your family sharing your names and the kind of bread or gluten-free treat you have and what the significance is to your family. Email those to ewiviott@ucevanston.org by 11/18.
-
Stories of Breaking Bread: If you have a story of breaking bread – a time when you were moved, changed, or uplifted while sharing a meal – can you tell that story in a video 3-5 minutes long? If so, let us know. We’d like to include a few of these stories on the 22nd.
-
Proximity Partners: Talk with your Proximity Partner Group and plan a way to do a safe bread exchange in your neighborhood.
If you have any questions, reach out to Rev. Eileen at ewiviott@ucevanston.org. I'm eager to have us share in a meaningful bread communion service this year, demonstrating the generative nourishment of our community.

We still need YOUR donations, for UCE’s Serendipity Auction to be a success. Never donated before? This is the year to do it! Do you have a hidden artistic or creative skill that we do not yet know about? Put it on display at the auction. Would you co-host a virtual group event? The deadline for submitting donations is November 2, 2020.

Reflections with the Board
It is our goal as the Board of Trustees to maintain connections with you. To that end, we are beginning a new program entitled, “Reflections with the Board.” We will host these sessions via zoom once a month at 10 am before the service. The purpose of these sessions is twofold: One, we will often have information that we would like to share and two, these sessions are a time for us to listen to you. We want to hear how you are, as well as your ideas, suggestions, and concerns.
Our first session will be held on November 8th at 10 am. For this session, the Board will be inviting Dale Griffin, Carol Nielsen, and Connections Staff, Nia Tavoularis and Sue Loellbach to speak about the important work of Connections for the Homeless. Please join us to hear about UCE’s history with Connections for the Homeless, the work that Connections is doing in our community, the Endowment grant that was recently given to the organization, and ways that our congregation can be more involved with this organization...

UCE to Host Emergency Overnight Shelter this November
For the last four years, UCE has joined with other faith communities in Evanston to help keep those without a home from sleeping outside in the winter. We will fulfill this commitment again this year, with modifications agreed upon by other houses of worship and Interfaith Action of Evanston. From November 8 through the 28th, we will host up to 20 people from 9 pm to 7 am. Due to the pandemic, the shelter will be run by paid staff provided by Interfaith Action and Connections for the Homeless, with minimal volunteers coordinated through Interfaith Action. Tickets will be handed out at Connections and at the Hospitality Center for access to the shelter in order to prevent lines from forming outside the building.
We've reviewed this plan with our Covid Task Force and our faithful and dedicated staff, Liz and Steven Eason, who will be making sure our building is clean and safe during and beyond the time we host the shelter. Our principles call us to do what we can to care for the most vulnerable among us. The combined resources and generosity of this congregation make it possible for us to take action in this way. Thank you.
New volunteers are encouraged to attend one of two upcoming Zoom training sessions. The first is on Wednesday, November 4th at noon. The second is Friday, November 6th at 5pm. The Zoom link to these training sessions is included below. Experienced volunteers are welcome to attend if they are interested in the changes to the EOS due to COVID-19.

A Holiday Tradition You Can Count On
Dear Ones, in a season where it might be hard to get your cheer and bearings, THERE WILL BE A MITTEN TREE. This tradition has over 3 decades of rich history at UCE and highlights the love and care of many of our members to help us all live our UU value of respect for the interdependent web of all existence in which we are a part.
In full disclosure, Mitten Tree will be a little different this year. Beyond the need to modify for safety of our congregation and our partnering communities, this is my first time taking the lead to coordinate our efforts. I have big mittens to fill and am in awe that Carol Nielsen devoted so many years of intention, relationships, and great record keeping that I have the honor to maintain.
This year, we will be partnering with 3 very special organizations to make the holiday season a little brighter.

From Jeanne Kerl, Midwest Leadership School Participant
In the online Midwest Leadership School this fall we have been learning a great deal. Today, I would like to share a short guide that many of you may be familiar with, but I thought it was worth sharing again. I have read it before in a session at General Assembly and found it very useful for thinking through what white supremacy culture is in my world. The short piece is called The Characteristics of White Supremacy Culture.
I found it worthwhile to read this and sit with it a bit. I asked myself “what about life here at UCE might be problematic or in need of re-thinking?” I jotted down some ideas in my journal about how I could do better and how I might talk with others about their thoughts after reading this piece. We are not perfect—nor should we try to be, but we can live together in more authentic way if we examine some of the ways we do things, I believe. I invite you to do the same.
Here’s the piece:

Wanted: Congregational Leaders
Like challenge?
Like to work with others?
Like the chance to significantly help UCE nurture the human spirit for a world made whole?
UCE’s Nominating and Recruitment Committee (N&R) is beginning its work to identify potential candidates for leadership positions in the church, some of whom are then elected at our annual meeting in the Spring to open positions on the Board of Trustees, Endowment Fund Trustees, and our own N&R Committee. Over the next few months we will be contacting folks who have shown an interest in being considered, and others who have been suggested by others as potential candidates.
This is challenging work in the best of times, and particularly so now. COVID presents its own problems in terms of peoples’ bandwidth capacities, heightened stress and competing priorities. We are also aware as never before that, just as we need to improve our capacities for “radical hospitality” to welcome people into our church...

Endowment Fund Money Still Available
There are Endowment Funds remaining to be distributed during this fiscal year. According to the Endowment Trust, the money can be used in the following ways:
- supporting special church projects not anticipated in or provided for by the operating budget;
- supporting the communities in which UCE resides and operates including spiritual, educational and economic needs;
- enhancing, repairing, supplementing or improving UCE’s building and property, including both real and personal property;
- scholarships and grants to UCE members and staff for education and training; and
- supporting the wider mission of Unitarian Universalism.
The Endowment Committee and the Board of Trustees appreciates the work of UCE members who have submitted Endowment Fund grant applications so far. The initiative of these members to identify grant opportunities, within UCE and in the larger community, and efforts to present them in applications for Endowment funding, have greatly extended the impact of UCE...

Our hats are off to each of you who participated in the UUTheVote/#VoteLove campaign and contributed to the "Get out the Vote" efforts around the country. We were blown away to learn we had over 70 postcard senders! We also had diligent text and phone bankers, individuals who signed petitions and donated funds, and volunteers who showed up at important events and helped new citizens register to vote.
Thank you for participating in our democracy and living out
our UU principles in the world. Your efforts have touched thousands! There are a record number of early voters at the polls and people are able to vote safely and informed due to your efforts. Thank you!

Would you like to share your talents and gifts in a worship service? We are looking for people of all ages to pre-record service elements such as:
- Songs
- Dances
- Readings
- Stories
- Our covenant
- Lighting the chalice
The process involves video recording yourself and uploading the file to a shared google folder. Instructions will be provided. You might be asked to read a particular story or sing a song that fits the theme of the service. Or, you might offer a song, story or poem you’d like to share, which we can use when and where it fits.

Your financial support is so appreciated!
Please help us ensure your contribution is credited appropriately by indicating on the memo line of your check if it is for 19/20 Pledge, 20/21 Pledge, Shared Offering or a Donation.
If you are texting to give, please send a text message to 312-584-9160 with the amount you would like to contribute and the one word code for where you would like it to go (e.g., 50 OFFERING). Valid codes are OFFERING (Shared Offering), PLEDGE (Pledge Payment), CAP (Capital Campaign), SOUPKIT (Soup Kitchen), or MUSIC (music fund). If you do not include a code after your donation amount, the system will automatically select PLEDGE. To learn more, click here. If you experience any issues or would like a one-on-one session to go over Text-to-Give, contact Adam at agough@ucevanston.org.
During these times when UCE staff are working from home we are trying to make trips to the church and our accounting tasks manageable for our Staff Accountant, Vickie Doebele. We respectfully request when you make a shared offering donation please do not ask for 100% to go to the organization. This truly would be helpful. We appreciate your understanding.

Virtual Meeting Planning Tips!
Do you need help setting up a virtual event? Have you been hosting a virtual event and want to make the planning and publicity process easier? UCE ministers and staff are here to help! There are several ways you can host an online event for free. If a free meeting won't work for your meeting, consider these steps:
-
Email the details of your meeting to admin@ucevanston.org so staff can help you set up and publicize your virtual event. Virtual UCE events can be advertised in the weekly newsletter, on the UCE calendar, on the UCE Facebook groups, and sometimes on the UCE homepage.
-
Work with staff on deciding who would be best to host the meeting. Do you or a member of your group have their own Zoom account? Is someone in your group willing and able to purchase an account? In these times of social distancing, it may be worthwhile to purchase an account for a year and use it for any personal or UCE-related events. Will a minister or staff member attend your meeting? Staff will put you in touch with that staff member to see if they can host your meeting with their Zoom account. If not, we can use another staff member’s Zoom account.
-
Once the Zoom link is created, consider whether you want to set up a registration for the virtual event. Is there a limit on how many you would like to participate? Do you want a list of participants so you can email them the link before the event?
Don't forget all UCE virtual events can be added to the UCE calendar. If you are interested in having your virtual events featured on the calendar, please contact the office at 847-864-1330 or email admin@ucevanston.org. If you want

All sessions will be via Zoom.

What can we as Unitarian Universalists learn from reading the New Testament?
Who was Jesus and why does he matter?
How can getting in touch with our Unitarian and our Universalist roots help us rethink the Christian message and even understand it in a new way?
Join us in discussing these questions and more on five Tuesdays in November and December. The course will be based on readings from the New Testament and the recent Beacon Press release "Christ for Unitarian Universalists." We welcome you to purchase a copy of the book here to follow the course's reading schedule, but the discussion will also be accessible for those who have not done the reading and would simply like to show up to share and listen.
Amy Pooley has been a UU for over a decade and a Christian for just a few years. She has a love for our faith’s Unitarian and Universalist roots. She is a graduate student in Counseling and she and her wife Ruth are the moms of a toddler.

Your Chance to Connect with Connections for the Homeless
We have new opportunities for volunteers who want to make a difference in our community in very concrete ways. Connections for the Homeless is a well-established, non-profit organization in Evanston, providing a wide range of services to homeless people. To address the complexities of services during the Covid19 pandemic, they have been creative and flexible and have increased their efforts to meet greater needs. They provide temporary housing, lunches, clothing and access to other essential services, including a path to permanent housing.
The UCE Prison Ministry and Food and Shelter Team are launching a renewed and invigorated partnership with Connections, along with a $40,000 donation from our Endowment Fund. Connections has effective infrastructure to provide services, which all depend on lots of volunteers. That’s where we come in - with volunteers! We’re starting with two areas - bag lunches and the Clothing Room at Hilda’s Place. We’re hopeful that in 2021 we can expand to other projects, as well...

We need penpals! The CLF (Church of the Larger Fellowship) Ambassador Program of IL has 24 incarcerated members who are waiting for a penpal from within our UU faith community. Could that be you?
Penpals are expected to write at least twice a month for a minimum of six months. We currently have over 40 penpal pairs some of whom have been writing for over two years. The penpal relationship starts from a place of shared faith community and can expand to whatever works for the Penpal pair. You’ll be joining a supportive and growing community of UUs tearing down walls.

There are so many ways you can live out our UU values in the world. This week the paramount way is by voting.
Vote
“Protest is telling the truth in public. We’re saying, This is a truth that you tried to hide, that you tried to tell us we weren’t supposed to talk about, and we refuse to let you do that. Protest opens space for the solution;…. I am mindful that like protest, voting is one tool in the toolkit, and the only way to build a house is to use all the tools. I tell people to vote, not because it’ll automatically change the world, but because we’re trying to build a house.”
~ DeRay Mckesson (italics are authors; bold is added) from his appearance on the podcast, At Liberty.
Social action continues! Check out the UCE Homepage for more ways you can support our communities. If you have any questions, please reach out to Rev. Susan Frances at sfrances@ucevanston.org. Thank you all for continuing to live UCE's mission!

Beware scam e-mails and texts from those
posing as UCE ministers, Staff, or Board Members
Please do not respond to the e-mail or text scam that is going out with Rev. Eileen's, Sandra's, or Jessica Tomell-Presto's names.
