HQ Happenings

Dear UCEA, it’s hard to believe that the summer is almost over! I hope you were all able to take some time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate. Even as HQ implemented a “slow down” July, we continued to work on projects and ideas important to you and UCEA.

We are pleased to welcome Cal Poly Pomona as our newest full member! Please visit their website to learn about their faculty, students, and programs. I look forward to having their wonderful students and faculty as part of our community!

We also very pleased to welcome Mariama Nagbe (UT 2021) as our new Post-Doctoral Research Fellow. Her expertise in organizational critical analysis and higher education experiences will enhance our continued work and development. This, of course, means that Davis Clement, who has been an invaluable member of Headquarters, is moving on. He begins as Assistant Professor at Eastern Michigan University, and we wish him the very best.

Lastly, I want to draw your attention to our new reinvented UCEA Café series which asks the question about the role of leadership preparation in confronting and addressing some of our nation’s social and racial injustices, particularly in schools. The first Café was hosted by Dr. Terri Watson, Please take a listen!

I know that this semester is starting with the same uncertainty that we experienced over the last eighteen months. Please continue to take care of yourselves and loved ones. We are here as a community to face whatever challenges lie ahead and are here to support you in whatever way we can.

UCEA 2021 10th Annual Graduate Student Summit

The GSS is an annual pre-conference event organized by the UCEA Graduate Student Council and has become one of the largest gatherings of educational leadership and policy graduate students in the United States. It provides graduate students with a space to engage in authentic dialogue about their scholarly work along with opportunities to meet and network with graduate students and faculty.

INFRASTRUCTURE BILL

In a bipartisan vote, the US Senate passed a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill. It includes funding for education projects like electric school buses, lead pipe abatement in schools, and expanded broadband access. Approval by the US House will likely be contingent on the passage of the American Families Plan.

ESSER FUNDS

States and districts are beginning to receive funds from the Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER ). Amid this unprecedented financial windfall for schools, many education advocates urge that all stakeholders be represented in making crucial decisions about how to spend the money, including school leaders, teachers, and parents.

SCHOOL MASK MANDATES

As the new school year approaches, mask mandates in schools remain hotly contested. States like Arizona, Florida , and Arkansas have banned mask mandates, while states like California and Illinois will require masks for everyone in school buildings. While some school districts have been given the freedom to make their own decisions, other districts plan to defy state orders and set their own mask policies.

VACCINE MANDATES

A growing number of postsecondary institutions are issuing Covid-19 vaccine mandates for all students, faculty, and staff, but not without resistance. Check out this map to see which institutions are requiring vaccines.
