Community-Building as Resilience-Building:
The Power of Support Groups for HIV-Positive Trans Mental Health Services
by Elizabeth Doerr
In the face of HIV and AIDS, Ms. Billie Cooper, a proud Black transgender woman, has been an unwavering advocate for the trans community's rights and services. Living with HIV since 1985, she played a crucial role in establishing the TransLife support group at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF), offering a vital space for Black trans individuals living with HIV and AIDS. Through resilience, community building, and prioritizing joy, TransLife continues to provide essential support for mental health and a sense of belonging to a historically marginalized group.
