The University of California Global Health Institute connects learners at the University of California and beyond to global health education and training opportunities to give them the knowledge, skills and experience they need to improve health both locally and globally. Since its inception, UCGHI is proud to have led many initiatives. Here is a summary of a few of our initiatives:

  • Suite of Online Courses: We have created and delivered 15 online courses related to topics in Global Health since 2015 with approximately 6,000 UC student learners. Explore our course catalog to enroll in courses for Spring Quarter 2025!

  • Increasing Accessibility in Graduate and Professional Global Health Education: We have made significant progress on initiatives in graduate and professional education including the development of a competency-based curriculum in “One Health” supported by USAID-funded One Health Workforce Next Generation Project, which is led by Center for Planetary Health Co-Director Woutrina Smith.

  • Expanding Global Health Reach Beyond UC: Since 2020, Education Director, Oladele Ogunseitan, served on the Global Health Competency Subcommittee for the Consortium of Universities for Global Health and supported development of the CUGH Global Health Competencies Toolkit.

  • Advocating for Major/Minors in Global Health Across UC: We have supported UC Santa Cruz and UC Irvine to successfully create major/minor programs in Global Health.

  • Diversifying the Next Generation of Global Health Workforce: Since 2019, our Centers and Programs have supported and facilitated global health education and leadership of over 500 students systemwide and at Charles Drew University through the Student Ambassador Program.

  • Additional Accomplishments:
  • In 2019, we co-sponsored the convening of UC Medical Schools to develop and share best practices for Global Health Education.
  • In 2021, we launched the Incubator Awards Program, funding seven teams working on diverse topics that aligned with global health equity. In 2022, three of the initiatives were awarded funds for an additional year of work.
