National Native American Heritage Month

In honor of Native American Heritage Month (also referred to as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month), the Institute intended on centering the voices of the HEAL Initiative’s Indigenous alumni doing impactful work in Indigenous mental health and Indigenous midwifery. Unfortunately, we were unable to obtain approvals with Indian Health Services to interview the HEAL alumni in time for the November newsletter. As an Institute, it is important to us to honor Native American Heritage Month by centering these important voices and therefore do not feel comfortable moving forward with the feature story without being able to interview them. We sincerely apologize. As we honor Native American Heritage Month, we commit to learning and unlearning beyond the month of November. As such, we will publish this important feature story in the December newsletter and will amplify Native and Indigenous voices throughout social media channels throughout the month of November. In the meantime, we would like to offer the following organizations to learn from and support:

  • Global Oneness Project is a resource to explore the stories of indigenous people and cultures around the world.
  • Land Rights Now mobilizes and engages active citizens, media, communities, and organizations worldwide to promote and secure the land rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
  • Native American Food Sovereignty Alliance advocates for and supports all levels of food security and food sovereignty in local, tribal, regional, national, and international arenas.
  • Native American Rights Fund protects Native American rights, resources, and lifeways through litigation, legal advocacy, and legal expertise.
  • Wahpepah’s Kitchen educates communities and organizations on food sovereignty and the health benefits of Native foods.
  • Honor the Earth creates awareness and support for Native environmental issues and develops needed financial and political resources for the survival of sustainable Native communities.
  • Sogorea Te’ Land Trust cultivates rematriation in the East Bay, which is traditional Lisjan Ohlone Land.

We invite our global health community to share other indigenous organizations you know and/or work with!
