University of California Students Tell Us the Importance of Hispanic Heritage Month

This incoming class of freshmen is the largest number of California residents ever admitted into the University of California. The largest group represented are Latine students (37.6% of incoming students). We are inspired by the University of California’s Hispanic and Latine students who have committed to global health, especially this Hispanic Heritage Month. One of the greatest assets of the UC Global Health Institute Advisory Council is the diverse multidisciplinary faculty representation across all 10 campuses in the University of California system. UCGHI through UC Online offers a suite of online global health courses open to all University of California students. The courses aim to connect UC students interested in global health and inspire them to explore and contribute to this growing discipline.

The GloCal Health Fellowship welcomes 17 new fellows this year along with 2 Fulbright-Fogarty fellows, who come from a wide variety of disciplines, including epidemiology, engineering, community medicine, and biostatistics.

Latinxs and the Environment implemented the UC Office of the President Hispanic Serving Institution Doctoral Diversity Initiative grant obtained jointly by Center for Planetary Health UCR and UCB faculty to encourage strong Latinx student participation at both campuses. The number of students in the program continues to grow!

SHINE Strong, NIH training program, is the first undergraduate training program for HIV prevention and trans and nonbinary scholarship to develop the next generation of HIV prevention scientists and experts in trans and nonbinary population health. Meet the newest cohort of five undergraduates for 2023-2024!

The HEAL Initiative held a weeklong leadership and peer learning workshop for fellows and alumni. Fellows shared community projects and innovative ideas for addressing underserved patient populations. The 62 HEAL fellows came from Navajo Nation (US), Mexico, Malawi, Liberia, Rwanda, Nepal, Uganda, and Mali.

Advances in Global Health is open for submissions and particularly welcomes contributions from researchers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Advances in Global Health is a peer-reviewed, open access, research journal that is focused on advancing health equity throughout the world.

The conference will feature keynote speaker Dr. Loralee Larios, Assistant Professor and Plant Ecologist from UC Riverside.
