The Criminal Justice Clinic secured the release of one of its clients, Willie Norton, after he had served more than 30 years in federal prison. Since the start of the Compassionate Release Program in 2018, this is the 15th successful case for the Criminal Justice Clinic.

Professor Stoever, director of the UCI Domestic Violence Clinic and the UCI Initiative to End Family Violence, and co-chair of the OC Domestic Violence Death Review Team, was recognized by the OC Register for her involvement in producing a report that analyzed domestic violence deaths in OC during a 10-year period.

UCI Law's International Justice Clinic, led by Professor David Kaye, has joined a broad coalition of human rights and social justice groups addressing the Biden administration in a letter sent to the White House December 15.

Professor Taylor Poppe is an interdisciplinary, empirical scholar whose research focuses on inequalities in access to civil justice. She is the Faculty Director of the UCI Law Initiative for Inclusive Civil Justice, and an affiliated faculty member for the Center for Empirical Research on the Legal Profession.

Q&A with Karisa Yocham ’17, 2023 UCI Law Alumni Association President
Karisa Yocham is a 2017 graduate of UCI Law. She works as a consumer protection attorney for the Department of Insurance of the State of California. Karisa is the current president of the UCI Law Alumni Association, where she was the chair of the Public Interest Committee for 2021 and 2022. She joins the newly elected 2023 Law Alumni Association Council who began their terms January 1, 2023.

Q: How did UCI Law prepare you for your legal practice?
From clinic experience, to pro bono opportunities, to outstanding professors, I definitely felt UCI Law prepared me well for my legal career. One especially memorable class was Public Interest Advocacy with Professor Rosenbaum, where I learned direct and cross examination skills. I still use many of those skills in my current work.
Q: What do you like best about your work?
The best part of my work is definitely doing consumer protection work for Californians. I found a passion for this work when I took Consumer Protection Law with Katie Porter, and I am so glad I found a career that allowed me to put that passion into action.
Q: What was the best part about being a student at UCI Law?
The best part about being a student at UCI Law was becoming a part of a supportive, driven, and diverse community. Not only were my classmates and professors kind and helpful in law school, but I can still call on them for help and guidance today.
Q: How do you stay involved with the UCI Law community?
I stay involved with the UCI Law community by being an active member of the alumni association and keeping in touch with my classmates. I enjoy meting new legal anteaters through my work with the alumni association!
