While I am excited for everything that UCI Libraries have planned for this year, the new academic year and the release of our Annual Report also has me thinking about everything that we have already achieved. In our newly released Annual Report, you will learn about the ways that UCI Libraries are providing foundational support for our campus and community and are contributing to advances across the nation.

Other highlights this month include a new Libraries subscription to The HistoryMakers, the nation’s largest African American oral history video collection, as well as the installation of a US Holocaust Memorial Museum special poster exhibit in Langson Library: Some Were Neighbors: Choice, Human Behavior, and the Holocaust. This exhibit challenges us to ask important questions as we reflect on the motives and pressures that influenced citizens' choices and behaviors during the Holocaust.

I encourage you to see Some Were Neighbors while it is on display in Langson Library, now through November 2023, during regular library hours. The Libraries are saddened by recent events and their reminder that we live in a time of violence. We hope this poster exhibit will help the community find teachable moments that will help us to remember, to learn, and to find relevance today.

During this past year, the Libraries initiated open-access publishing pilot programs that reduced educational costs for students, upgraded study spaces, and served as the host site for an undergraduate fellowship, all of which enhanced student success.

This UCI Libraries special poster exhibit is made possible by the Samueli Foundation.
Published in 1623, Shakespeare’s First Folio was a landmark of printing at the time and, as of 2020, is the most expensive piece of literature ever auctioned. In celebration of the First Folio’s 400th anniversary, this exhibit will delve into what makes this book so treasured, with special attention paid to the copy housed in the UCI Libraries Special Collections and Archives.

To bring deeper understanding of the incredible rise in book banning, the School of Social Sciences and UCI Libraries are hosting a panel discussion with noted authors of children’s and young adult books whose works have been banned, and with PEN America, a nonprofit working to defend and celebrate free expression in the United States and worldwide.
