JoAnn Roberts and Sada Boyd, the new co-leads for BSiB (Black Scholars in Bioscience) are hosting a Spring 2022 Meet-n-Eat! This space is an affinity space for Black Scholars to come, eat, get to know new people and vibe with old friends. We are excited to work together to strengthen and support our community of Black Scholars.

CEILS Scientific Teaching Institute - Foundations of Equitable Course Design & Inclusive Teaching

Dates: Aug 24 - 31, 2022 (excluding the weekend). Participants meet daily (in-person) from 9am - 4pm.
Description: The CEILS Scientific Teaching Institute is designed to introduce you to evidence-based strategies for inclusive teaching and course design. The experience is facilitated by CEILS staff and other UCLA faculty; and you will receive feedback on your daily assignments, culminating at the end of the week with a syllabus draft, assessment plan, sample lesson plan, and embedded feedback strategy. Tips, strategies, and resources for equity, accessibility, and remote/online design will be integrated into the workshops and course site resources.


CEILS Annual Faculty Workshop on Best Equitable Practices in Teaching
CEILS will be offering our annual full day faculty workshop on September 12, 2022. Agenda and RSVP to come. Please save the date!


Active Learning Bootcamp
September 13 and 14th CEILS will host an experiential event on active learning. Practice the techniques that you want to use in order to engage students in your classroom in meaningful discussions.

Bruin Learn Workshops: Leganto and Course Reading List
April 19 at 10:00am

UCLA course instructors using Bruin Learn are invited to one of two drop-in office hours for a demonstration and Q&A session of the new product, Leganto, and its corresponding tool in Bruin Learn, Course Reading List.

Course Reading List allows instructors to compile readings from the Library (including Course Reserves) and web sources (including videos, websites, and more) for student use in courses. Organize readings by week, add due dates, and track student use in Course Reading List/Leganto. Participants will see how to get started and have any questions answered about about how to use Course Reading List/Leganto for your course.
Equity Through Access: Mitigating Barriers to STEM for Underrepresented Scholars From Marginalized & Minoritized Backgrounds

The presenter will share suggestions and effective mitigation measures to help bridge barriers to entry, persistence, and success for underrepresented scholars into programs designed for students and early career STEM professionals, and will share thoughts on how to create a safer, more inclusive experience for participants from all backgrounds.

The UCLA Center for the Advancement of Teaching seeks graduate students with an interest in teaching and learning to join their team as one of four Graduate Educational Developers starting in Summer 2022.

Each position will be a 25% or 50% role at either the Teaching Associate or Fellow level, depending on candidate availability and quarterly workload. CAT would ideally like to hire candidates who can continue the position through fall, winter and spring quarters of the 22-23 academic year.

Support for Equitable Instruction
POD Network Research Grants Subcommittee of the Scholarship Committee is pleased to offer the following research grant opportunities.
 
POD Network is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion; while all proposals are welcome, POD Network is particularly interested in proposals that advance equity and justice. POD Network is especially interested in receiving applications from those who identify as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and/or as a member of other groups that are minoritized in the university, including LGBTQIA+ and those with disabilities.

Proposed research may be carried out within an existing program or as part of a new initiative. The duration of the grant is for one full year.
For the 2022-2023 award period, the Core Committee has made a total of $14,000 (approved at the June 2021 Core Committee meeting) available to fund:

Humanizing Online STEM 
Excited to share the preliminary research findings for Humanizing Online STEM through teaching professional development, a cross-system grant project including all three California public higher education systems supported by funding from the California Education Learning Lab to eliminate equity gaps in online STEM.
