CEILS SUMMER SCIENTIFIC TEACHING INSTITUTE:
Foundations of Equitable Course Design & Inclusive Teaching

August 24 - 31, 2022 (excluding the weekend)
9:00am - 4:00pm | In-person
Apply Now!

The CEILS Scientific Teaching Institute is designed to introduce you to evidence-based strategies for inclusive teaching and course design. The experience is facilitated by CEILS staff and other UCLA faculty; and you will receive feedback on your daily assignments, culminating at the end of the week with a syllabus draft, assessment plan, sample lesson plan, and embedded feedback strategy. Tips, strategies, and resources for equity, accessibility, and remote/online design will be integrated into the workshops and course site resources.

Top 5 Reasons to Apply:

  1. See other people and have professional conversations about teaching IN PERSON! Are you way past the point of Zoom fatigued and ready to be social again? So are we! Come and be in community where you will get your fall course planned out and hopefully also have a bit of FUN!
  2. Be proactive and get your fall course preparation started in August, rather than procrastinating until the week before classes! Finalize your syllabus, assignments and activities with strong support and feedback from peers.
  3. Review some best practices for course design and teaching and learn some new ideas. Daily workshops provide an overview on some of the evidence-based teaching practices that you can incorporate into your course design.
  4. Consult and brainstorm with peers on how to improve your course. Don't sit alone at your desk drafting your syllabus, come and be in community! We will have ample opportunities to give feedback and exchange ideas.
  5. Get a bit of practice being a "student" in BruinLearn. Our daily activities and resources will utilize BruinLearn, and our facilitators can help you get more comfortable with different tools and features you might want to incorporate into your own course site.

Now Recruiting: Peer-Assisted Reflections on Student Learning (PAROSL) Participants for Fall 2022

Peer-Assisted Reflections on Student Learning, or PAROSL, is a program designed to help faculty boost their teaching dossier and hone their pedagogy. PAROSL focuses on equitable teaching: student-centered instruction and inclusive practices. Faculty participate in pairs to support—not evaluate—each other through reciprocal observation of lessons and the implementation of an innovative teaching strategy. Engagement in PAROSL spans a quarter, and faculty typically spend a total of about thirteen hours supporting each other and improving their own practice. Participants receive a certificate of completion, as well as assistance writing a research-based description of the teaching innovation they implemented.

The PAROSL program is administered by the Center for the Advancement of Teaching. Space is limited. If you’d like to learn more, please check out the PAROSL website or contact the CAT team at [email protected].

Sunset Timeline for CCLE

One of the final steps in the LMS Transformation process is to decommission CCLE and SSC Moodle. Please see below for important dates in the CCLE sunset timeline that are coming in the months ahead. Schools, departments, and units using CCLE must fully transition to Bruin Learn by the start of the Fall term. Access to CCLE will continue through mid-Fall, after which course material will be stored in an archive with limited formatting and available only by request to Bruin Learn Support at [email protected]. The following are critical dates:

September 10, 2022
After summer sessions end, no additional courses or collaboration sites will be created on CCLE and SSC Moodle. No further changes should be made to existing courses on these platforms after this date. Any updates made in CCLE or SSC Moodle after September 10, 2022 may be lost. Submission of student assignments after this date (e.g., to address incompletes) should be handled by instructors outside of CCLE. If assistance is needed in identifying alternative options, please contact Bruin Learn Support at [email protected].

September 26, 2022
A final course migration refresh from CCLE to Bruin Learn will begin, including courses specifically requested by faculty and Summer ‘22 courses. Instructors may request inclusion of specific courses that have not been automatically migrated (earlier than Spring 2019) or have been recently updated, by reaching out to local support or emailing Bruin Learn Support with the link to the CCLE course(s) at [email protected].

November 18, 2022
After 5:00 p.m., CCLE will no longer be available for general use. Note that local units may choose to sunset CCLE support before November 18 based on their resources and needs. Please watch for further messages from your local support team on this topic. Faculty should reach out to local support or CCLE Home by October 24, 2022 if they need assistance with manually obtaining or viewing material from CCLE.
Course content and student data will be stored in an archive prior to the sunset. Going forward, instructors will be able to request retrieval of archived CCLE data from Bruin Learn Support. However, the archive will store only content and not formatting. For this reason, instructors are encouraged to request migration of old courses they might need to Bruin Learn and review any content already migrated that they wish to compare with the CCLE version.

After December 16, 2022, all support requests should be sent to Bruin Learn Support at [email protected]. CCLE support email addresses will no longer be monitored. Please reach out to your local support or academic unit leads (AULs) for further support in this transition and let us know of any questions by contacting Bruin Learn Support at the email address above.

Exciting news – Ally, an EdTech tool, is now available! Ally assists with digital accessibility and has already been used by in Spring and Summer courses. Learn more about this LTI by accessing the Introduction to Ally site.
