CEILS SUMMER SCIENTIFIC TEACHING INSTITUTE:
Foundations of Equitable Course Design & Inclusive Teaching

August 24 - 31, 2022 (excluding the weekend)
9:00am - 4:00pm | In-person
Apply by August 1st!

The CEILS Scientific Teaching Institute is designed to introduce you to evidence-based strategies for inclusive teaching and course design. The experience is facilitated by CEILS staff and other UCLA faculty; and you will receive feedback on your daily assignments, culminating at the end of the week with a syllabus draft, assessment plan, sample lesson plan, and embedded feedback strategy. Tips, strategies, and resources for equity, accessibility, and remote/online design will be integrated into the workshops and course site resources.

Top 5 Reasons to Apply:

  1. See other people and have professional conversations about teaching IN PERSON! Are you way past the point of Zoom fatigued and ready to be social again? So are we! Come and be in community where you will get your fall course planned out and hopefully also have a bit of FUN!
  2. Be proactive and get your fall course preparation started in August, rather than procrastinating until the week before classes! Finalize your syllabus, assignments and activities with strong support and feedback from peers.
  3. Review some best practices for course design and teaching and learn some new ideas. Daily workshops provide an overview on some of the evidence-based teaching practices that you can incorporate into your course design.
  4. Consult and brainstorm with peers on how to improve your course. Don't sit alone at your desk drafting your syllabus, come and be in community! We will have ample opportunities to give feedback and exchange ideas.
  5. Get a bit of practice being a "student" in BruinLearn. Our daily activities and resources will utilize BruinLearn, and our facilitators can help you get more comfortable with different tools and features you might want to incorporate into your own course site.

CEILS Annual Faculty Workshop on Best Equitable Practices in Teaching
September 14, 2022
9:00am - 4:00pm (followed by reception) | Hershey Hall 158
This annual, all-day faculty workshop addresses select topics in science and math education. This workshop is appropriate for everyone—new or veteran teachers—interested in learning more about equitable teaching practices based on education research. We especially encourage instructors who either are relatively new to college teaching or who have instructional responsibilities in large enrollment gateway courses for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors.

Topics include effective course design as well as student-centered teaching strategies that incorporate active learning and create equitable and inclusive classroom environments. Many of the instructional techniques focus on facilitating peer learning and other collaborative and group activities designed to support student success in large enrollment classes.

The format and emphasis of this day-long event has been modified from previous years, so even if you have participated in this workshop before, you might consider attending again and learning something new!

Two-Day Active Learning Bootcamp
September 15 - 16, 2022
After our day-long Faculty Workshop, we've gotten feedback that participants wished they had more time to actually practice active learning approaches they're considering for their courses.

In this Bootcamp, you will learn about and practice an array of instructional approaches to actively engage your students in their learning and collaboratively with one another, discussing how each approach can be adapted to small and large class sizes. Then, you will get support in figuring out how to actually implement these in your own course, designing specific questions and group activities to fit your course goals.

(If you've attended a week-long summer institute in the past, this is a great refresher and additional practice!)
OCTOBER: Becoming an Anti-Racist Educator Series
3-Part Series: Becoming an Anti-Racist Educator
Multiple Days (see link)
2:00pm - 4:00pm

The CEILS Becoming an Anti-racist Educator Conversation Series reflects and creates space for discussion of one’s own racial identity development and how racial identity and other social identities impact our learning environments. With colleagues, participants in these discussions will spend intentional time on student-centered, inclusive and equitable, and anti-racist action strategies that can be implemented in the classroom and laboratory learning environments to work against the impacts of racism.

These workshops will be in-person, interactive 2 hour sessions with didactics and small group discussions. Each session builds on the content and experience of the previous session, therefore we ask that you attend all 3 sessions. Please see the workshop descriptions below:

Part 1 – Inside work: Reflecting and Exploring Identity, Privilege, Definitions of race, racism and antiracism. Offered Monday, Oct 17 and Tuesday, Oct. 18th (pick one).

Part 2 – Outside work: Identifying inclusive and antiracist pedagogy and strategies in the classroom, tools and practice interrupting microaggressions. Offered Monday, Oct. 24 or Tuesday, Oct. 25th (pick one).

Part 3 – Discuss and identify strategies to implement and create a more anti-racist climate, apply to an action plan to take anti-racist action in your learning environment, get feedback from colleagues. Offered Monday, Oct 31st or Tuesday, Nov. 1st (pick one).

All sessions take place from 2-4pm.

Can rubrics combat gender bias in faculty hiring?

Mary Blair-Loy, Olga V. Mayorova, Pamela C. Cosman, Stephanie I. Fraley, Can rubrics combat gender bias in faculty hiring? Science. Vol 377, Issue 6601. DOI: 10.1126/science.abm23

Abstract: Research has documented the presence of bias against women in hiring, including in academic science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Hiring rubrics (also called criterion checklists, decision support tools, and evaluation tools) are widely recommended as a precise, cost-effective remedy to counteract hiring bias, despite a paucity of evidence that they actually work (see table S8). Our in-depth case study of rubric usage in faculty hiring in an academic engineering department in a very research-active university found that the rate of hiring women increased after the department deployed rubrics and used them to guide holistic discussions. Yet we also found evidence of substantial gender bias persisting in some rubric scoring categories and evaluators’ written comments. We do not recommend abandoning rubrics. Instead, we recommend a strategic and sociologically astute use of rubrics as a department self-study tool within the context of a holistic evaluation of semifinalist candidates.

This brief is the first in a two-part series in which the NSF INCLUDES Aspire Alliance Research Team draws on recent research studies and various news sources to explore the ongoing toll and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on U.S. college and university campuses.

In this brief, Stephanie M. Breen and Leslie D. Gonzales describe the impact of COVID-19 on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) graduate students and present a consolidated set of resources that faculty, advisors, and institutions may find helpful as they continue to work with and support BIPOC graduate students during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The next brief will discuss how colleges and universities managed DEI commitments in the context of COVID-19.
