AUGUST 24 - 31: Week-long CEILS Scientific Teaching Institute - Foundations of Equitable Course Design & Inclusive Teaching

Aug 24 - 31, 2022 (excluding the weekend). Participants meet daily (in-person) from 9am - 4pm.

The CEILS Scientific Teaching Institute is designed to introduce you to evidence-based strategies for inclusive teaching and course design. The experience is facilitated by CEILS staff and other UCLA faculty; and you will receive feedback on your daily assignments, culminating at the end of the week with a syllabus draft, assessment plan, sample lesson plan, and embedded feedback strategy. Tips, strategies, and resources for equity, accessibility, and remote/online design will be integrated into the workshops and course site resources.

SEPT 12: One Full Day - CEILS Annual Faculty Workshop on Best Equitable Practices in Teaching

This annual, all-day faculty workshop addresses select topics in science and math education appropriate for instructors who either are relatively new to college teaching or who have instructional responsibilities in the large enrollment gateway courses for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors. Topics include effective course design as well as student-centered teaching strategies that incorporate active learning and create equitable and inclusive classroom environments. Many of the instructional techniques focus on facilitating peer learning and other collaborative and group activities designed to support student success in large enrollment classes.

The format and emphasis of this day-long event has been modified from previous years, so even if you have participated in this workshop before, you might consider attending again and learning something new!

SEPT 13 - 14: Two-Day Active Learning Bootcamp

Learn about and practice an array of instructional approaches to actively engage your students in their learning and collaboratively with one another, discussing how each approach can be adapted to small and large class sizes. Then get support in figuring out how to actually implement these in your own course, designing specific questions and group activities to fit your course goals.

CEILS will be sending out a detailed announcement with information on how to apply to the week-long institute and RSVP for other events. Stay tuned!

Designing Culturally-relevant Educational Technology at a Global Scale
Monday, May 23rd | 1:30pm - 2:30pm PDT
Amy Ogan, Carnegie Mellon University

Abstract: With increased access to digital technologies worldwide and across socioeconomic groups, the world is poised for a revolution in teaching and learning practices. The COVID-19 pandemic has enabled new opportunities for some learners but starkly reminds us that these resources are still not equally distributed. New technologies can foster equal opportunities for education and quality of life, or amplify social divisions. In this talk we will discuss the design of next-generation learning technologies for a global audience, in which educational experiences are built with a computer-in-the-loop approach, thus enabling us to push the boundaries of the application of technology to learning. In this way we can use technology to address the humanity and context of the learner and the ecology in which they learn.
