Dear Community Member,

UCM has served our community for 50 years, and we cannot be more grateful to supporters who assist us in living our mission to the fullest …empowering our neighbors in need.

We empathize with the hardships that furloughed government employees are experiencing. We stand with you during this time of uncertainty and are ready to help.

We wish to thank civil servants, military personnel, and veterans in the UCM community who work in federal government to serve the public good and to help keep us safe. Amid the unfortunate government shutdown, we wish all furloughed government employees in our community to know that UCM is open to help our neighbors:

  • Access to nutritious food through the UCM food pantry.
  • Visit our Back Porch Thrift shop with your Federal ID, and we will offer a 50% discount.
  • Attend a financial management class or receive one-on-one consultation.
  • Volunteer with us as an ESL teacher, youth mentor, or homework helper; or provide general office support.

If you are in need of assistance as a result of the furlough, please first contact us at 703.768.7106 or at to see how we may be able to help.

Our doors are open .
Signed, Alison DeCoucey
