Racquet Club

Dear UCRC Tennis Community,

We, your volunteer board members, would like to publicly thank Simon Shen for serving as UCRC Club Director since September 2021. We worked diligently with Simon to restore our club to a tennis-only facility. We appreciate his dedication to the club and its members and supported him as best we could throughout his tenure. When Simon signed a 3.5 year contract this past July, we looked forward to a long-term relationship with him and pursuing goals of increased membership and improvements to the club along with offering high-quality instructional opportunities for both members and non-members in the form of clinics, youth camps and private lessons. We still have these goals for the club, but understand the need for work-family balance, and we wish Simon the best.

Since Simon submitted his resignation on April 18, the board members have been working overtime to analyze how our club has been operating. We have consulted with fellow tennis clubs and the San Diego District Tennis Association’s Advocacy Committee; based on those meetings and other research, we have decided to restructure the organization of the club and its business model.

We plan to have a contracted, part-time Club Manager to operate the club’s day-to-day functions with assistance, guidance, and oversight from the board. Most importantly, the club will also contract with a Director of Tennis, who will be responsible for offering a larger amount of instructional opportunities for the tennis community while generating revenue for the club to help cover club expenses and begin to build a reserve fund for future maintenance costs.

Play longer under the sunshine...or the bright lights!

  • Board members initiated a round of electrical repairs to our light system this past February and just last week, the electrician worked directly with us to finish the repairs. For the first time in the past couple years, all 48 lights are functioning! This cost over $3,500, which the board sees as money well spent and we’re committed to keeping all the lights on.
  • Additionally, we’re working on obtaining quotes for the LED light project we hope to make progress on this year, pending funding via grants and charitable donations.
  • Court reservation time limits have been increased as follows:
  • up to 60 minutes for individual practice
  • up to 90 minutes for singles (two players)
  • up to 120 minutes for doubles (four players)

Memberships get a boost....

The club needs to boost memberships, so we have implemented a number of changes and are offering some promotions, too, so please refer a friend, save some $ and help the club......

  • Senior memberships have been reinstated and Senior Couple memberships are now available, both at $50 discounts from the adult prices.
  • The $100 initiation fee has been changed to a $50 registration fee, which is a one-time administrative fee for processing a new membership.
  • Memberships will no longer be prorated; they will be full one year memberships that expire one year after the membership fee is paid.
  • Current members can now refer new members for a $50 discount on their new membership; the referring member will receive a $50 discount if they renew their membership before it expires; one discount per member per year, please.
  • All new members will also receive a free UCRC shirt in the size and color of their choice while supplies last.

Now Hiring Friendly Tennis Fanatics

  • As we restructure, and due to impending changes to our Special Use Permit with the City of SD that will require a staff member to be physically on-site anytime the courts are open, we are looking for individuals interested in working part-time for the club as a Court Monitor.
  • Court Monitor positions are vital and the face of our club; their duties will include:
  • Greeting and checking in players to verify memberships and collecting fees from non-members
  • Verifying reservations and assigning courts as available
  • Processing new memberships
  • Maintaining cleanliness of the courts and clubhouse (blowing off leaves and other debris, measuring nets, putting out scoreboards, emptying trash, cleaning bathrooms, etc.)
  • Other assigned tasks
  • Stringing racquets for additional compensation
  • If you or someone you know is interested in this fun, part-time opportunity, please contact us via UCRCboard@gmail.com and feel free to include your resumé.

Join our Round Robins!

Want to meet new people, support UCRC, AND play tennis? Then our Round Robins are for you! Once a month, gather with fellow players ranked 3.5 - 4.0 for 6 courts of doubles fun from 10:30am - 2pm. Board member Lyn Balagtas started our monthly RRs in summer of 2021 and hasn't missed a month yet!

Open to all ages. The current price for the monthly Round Robin is $15: the club covers the cost of tennis balls and the $15 goes toward our current Capital Campaign to raise funds for maintenance of the courts.

Summer Dates:

  • May 21 (full)
  • June 25th
  • July 23rd
  • August 20th

To sign up for the Round Robins, please email the board at UCRCboard@gmail.com with the subject line: Round Robin Signup.

We're also working on creating other opportunities, at no cost for members, to meet up and play. If you would like to help with social events, please email the board at UCRCboard@gmail.com with the subject line: Let's Get Social

Thank you for your support!

As we move forward, we would appreciate your continued support and hope you can help us improve and grow the club, be it through referring new members, your charitable donations, or simply getting out there on the courts. The UCRC website is always available as a resource to stay informed about not only daily court conditions, but upcoming opportunities to play with other members, board meeting dates, past meeting minutes, club organization documents, and more.
