Greetings!

We hope everyone is staying safe! In this newsletter we highlight the industry sponsored Capstone projects and events that you may wish to attend in the upcoming weeks, including the Center for Responsible Machine Learning Summit and the UCSB Chemical Sciences and Engineering Virtual Career Fest.

Fall is almost here and it’s time to start planning your Fall 2020 virtual recruiting events! Now is the time to solidify your university relationships in a fully virtual quarter because events do not require extra budget or travel time! To secure your company's spot in our campus recruiting schedule, please contact Ashley Antoon at antoon@engineering.ucsb.edu to schedule a virtual info session or to send out any current job postings.

Virtual Event

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing our world. The Center for Responsible Machine Learning reflects UCSB's commitment to advancing cutting-edge research in AI, machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, with an emphasis on the societal impacts of these rapidly evolving technologies. The center is particularly interested in addressing issues of fairness, bias, privacy, transparency, explainability, and accountability in the context of AI algorithms, and in understanding the wide range of ethical, policy, legal, and even energy-efficiency issues associated with machine-learning models. They envision the center becoming an indispensable locus of innovation, where bold leaders produce visionary software and revolutionary techniques that powerfully serve the greater good.

Industry Sponsored Capstone Projects
The UCSB Engineering Capstone Program is a year-long (2 quarters for CS; Fall and Winter), project-based course offered to fourth-year engineering students. The program focuses on the development of our students into professionals by pairing students with experts from industry and/or experts from academia to create an engineered solution for real and meaningful problems. In the spirit of UC Santa Barbara's collaborative culture, the program has grown to be truly multidisciplinary, tackling far-reaching problems across the disciplines of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering that have resulted in systems that exceed the abilities of a single department. We invite you to browse our projects and our talented students and to become involved in our mission of educating the future engineering leaders.

This symposium, hosted by the Chemical Professional Development group, is designed to inspire the next generation of chemistry professionals. It serves as an exceptional opportunity to connect with chemistry students and faculty at UCSB. Our program agenda will include:

  • Panel discussion by industry representatives
  • Company Showcase
  • Small group student-to-industry networking session

The goals of the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Career Fest are for the students to gain first-hand insight into industry, as well as strengthen the network between industry and our UCSB students.

Friday, September 24th, 2020

The UCSB Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Symposium is a forum for Chemical Engineering Ph.D. students to present their original research. The event is designed to provide a networking opportunity between industry attendees and members of the department with two main goals:

  1. Highlight ongoing work in the department to stimulate industrial collaborations
  2. Facilitate interactions with students seeking future employment opportunities

The Symposium consists of oral presentations given by senior students, as well as a poster session showcasing work throughout the department. Attendees will receive the abstracts and CVs of presenting students to enable future connections.

*No cost to attend this year's virtual event
We always appreciate any input you may have on how we can improve, so please don't hesitate to send us your feedback. Thank you for your continued interest in our program. For further information, please visit the Industry Center website at www.industry.ucsb.edu
