Dr. Rais Vohra won the California ACEP House of Medicine Award. This award is given to a member of California ACEP who has significantly improved the standing and influence of emergency medicine within the house of medicine and done so through their leadership within and among other organizations, especially other specialty societies and state and national health care organizations.

With the support and assistance of Dr. Rais Vohra (pictured above in Achievements) the Community Medical Centers Bridge Team has received the Behavior Health Pilot Project (BHPP) grant, supporting substance use disorder services at both Community Regional and Clovis Community Medical Centers. The total award amount is 200K over a 12-month period, and over 200 California Emergency Departments will be participating. To increase diversity in our emergency medicine workforce, Fred Wu, PA spoke at two PA programs housed within historically black colleges and universities (HBCU): Morehouse School of Medicine and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.

The Mobile HeaL team and Medical Director Dr. Kenny Banh have launched the Fresno COVID-19 Equity Project (CEP) in partnership with Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to conduct free testing, contact tracing, community education and outreach as part of the City of Fresno’s COVID-19 response to support communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. https://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/cep/

The 2020 Virtual Mini Med School has begun. Led by Program Director Dr. Sukhjit Dhillon, we have had around 600 attendees view our virtual lectures form all over the United States, and a few from other countries such as Spain and Iran. Drs. Rais Vohra, Jessica Mason, and Jessie Werner presented on “COVID-19 Community Response,” and Dr. Susanne Spano presented during the “Critical Care in the Sky and on Land” session.

2020 saw the Inaugural Virtual Wilderness Medicine Elective! Dr. Erika Falsgraf, PGY3, did an excellent job of running the course. Along with Dr. Michelle Storkan, Dr. Falsgraf helped develop a brand-new curriculum with online didactics that included interactive skills and outdoor activities which students completed on their own. Also involved in the elective were new Wilderness Fellow, Dr. Arielle Filiberti, and Dr. Marie Lutz, PGY3. The 12 students from multiple time zones also enjoyed a virtual talent show and s’mores night.

Dr. Mackensie Yore, PGY4, has developed the UCSF Fresno Health Equity Action Lab. This allows physicians like Dr. Yore to improve health on a community scale and provides the mechanism for many different health professionals to work together to address health inequities. Participants will be given selected readings on health equity issues, and Dr. Yore wants to arrange conversations and collaborations with community-based organizations and local institutions who serve at-risk groups of Fresnans. https://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/2020/08/21/healthequity/

Marie Martinez has joined the UCSF Fresno Department of Emergency Medicine, effective August 19 as the Faculty Support Coordinator. Marie will support the department with academic affairs coordination, reimbursements, department committee meetings, and other projects. Marie held various positions at The Terraces at San Joaquin Gardens for six years, where she covered administrative, operational, and customer service roles. She currently volunteers at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Bristol Hospice Care. Marie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science – Health Administration from California State University, Fresno, where she was the founder and president of the Student Global Health Initiative. In her free time, Marie enjoys rock climbing, hiking, and fixing up her 95-year-old house.
