Dr. John Brown deployed with the Disaster Medical Assistance Team CA-6 to Louisiana from August 18-September 8, 2021. The team’s mission was one week of Emergency Department stabilization at the Louisiana Children’s Medical Center in New Orleans where he served as an Emergency Department Attending Physician to assist with their pediatric COVID surge. The team then went to North Oaks Hospital in Hammond, LA to shelter in place for Hurricane Ida. Following the storm, the team headed to Thibadoux, LA, to do a hospital assessment of the facilities there most impacted by the storm. The group spent the last week of their mission setting up a Base of Operation outside the Emergency Department of Thibadoux Regional Hospital, a referral center for southern LA with a catchment area of 100,000 population where 4 of the 5 critical access hospitals were shut down due to storm damage. Dr. Brown acted as the Chief Medical Officer for the NDMS facility which augmented emergency department capability there and turned the operation over to a joint DMAT from California and South Carolina. Pictures are of the LCMC Emergency Department, the “Green” triage level care tent, and the team pictured outside the BOO at Thibadoux. DMAT CA-6 is actively recruiting emergency physicians at the senior resident, fellow and attending level for future missions.
