Vice Chancellor Barry Selick Returns to the Private Sector
|
|
It is with much sadness that Innovation Ventures bids farewell to our Vice Chancellor of Business Development, Innovation, and Partnerships, Berry Selick as he steps down from his role at the University on January 8. His next venture will be as CEO of an early-stage biotech company focused on a novel antibody platform for therapeutics, with an initial focus on oncology.
Here is an excerpt from the University's Chancellor Sam Hawgood's
farewell message to Barry:
"I am deeply grateful for the leadership Barry has demonstrated in his five-plus years as head of Innovation Ventures and the ways it has improved our ability to work with our partners in industry. As a basic scientist who spent many years in biotech, Barry knew that the efforts of our faculty inventors would have a better chance of commercial success if they were more fully developed before we tried to license them
Under his leadership, Innovation Ventures strengthened and expanded the support provided to our translational research community in funding and helping to manage proof-of-concept studies of drug molecules, device prototypes, digital health applications, and more, to gather evidence on which inventions are most likely to help patients and address significant unmet medical needs. This effort has been reflected in the quality of UCSF start-up companies that benefit from both the technology as well as the hands-on support that the Innovation Ventures team provides to our faculty founders..."

Catalyst Awards Mini-Symposium
|
|
Last month, the Catalyst Program hosted Mukesh Patel, the Silicon Valley entrepreneur, and investor who has generously funded the Kunal Patel UCSF Innovation Fund in memory of his son Kunal, for a “Mini-Symposium” at the Log Cabin in San Francisco’s Presidio.
Attendees included Hal Collard, Vice Chancellor of Research, Barry Selick, Vice Chancellor of Business Development, Partnerships, Innovation, and Catalyst awardees. The afternoon included a keynote address by Catalyst Awardee Matt Jacobson and scientific talks from Catalyst Awardees Hani Goodarzi, Jesse Courtier, Julie Saba, and Jim Wells. The afternoon discussion was vibrant with translational research, scientific innovation, and inspiration.
UCSF Innovation Ventures is very grateful to the Patel Family for recognizing the importance of supporting early translation efforts through the Catalyst Program at UCSF.
