January is National Mentoring Month!
Throughout this month, the department celebrates and honors the faculty who have given their support, advice and encouragement over many years in the mentoring of junior faculty. We have a small pandemic-appropriate gift for each of our faculty to acknowledge the energy and work that mentoring entails, and to remind us all to connect with our mentors and mentees.
On Sunday, January 17, National Mentoring Day, we encourage our mentoring teams to connect with each other [remotely!] at 3:30 pm with a Zoom-your-Mentee, then join the whole department Family and friends at 4 pm for the Department Family Concert.

A. James Barkovich, MD and Camilla Lindan, MD, will present at the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology annual meeting ASPNR 2021: One and Done, on January 9, 2020.
Dr. Barkovich will present "Brain: Pediatric Epilepsy - the Big Picture" and Dr. Lindan will present "CNS Imaging Manifestations of COVID-19 in Children and PECOBIG."

Department Book Club:
Happy 2021! We’re kicking off 2021 with another installment of our book club.
As before, if you don’t want to purchase your own copy, we’ll order a batch for the apartment and lend them out to the first folks who respond. All faculty, staff, technologists, and trainees are welcome, and we will plan to meet in April to discuss over Zoom. Please contact Connie Jang if interested.
Family-Friendly Fun: Hope everyone and their families can make it to a special concert we’re hosting for our department: a Zoom performance by Dan and Claudia Zanes on 1/17/21, 4-4:45 pm. They are incredible award-winning musicians, and it promises to be a fun show for all ages to help kick off the new year. Please join us!
Health Equity: The start of the year is a great time to further deepen our understanding of how racism affects health. Consider signing up for this 1-hour evening session on “The History and Impact of Racism on Health Care, Medicine, and Science” which will explore the relationships between systemic racism and the health sciences as well as strategies for promoting health equity.

2020 Year in Review: Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Accomplishments |

2020 was historic and challenging! Years from now, we expect that history books will depict and analyze the pandemic and COVID-19, racial reckonings, political unrest and transition. As this history of 2020 is being written, the UC San Francisco Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging would like to take a moment to recognize this year’s highlights in service, patient care, research and education as well as the many department members who advocate for racial justice. In no way can we summarize, in just a few words, all of the contributions from our faculty, trainees, researchers, and staff along with the many (there really are many!) accolades and triumphs through the year. Here are some reflections and celebrations as we welcome 2021.

January is National Mentoring Month. In academic radiology, mentoring benefits both mentees and mentors in a number of ways. Mentors provide support and share knowledge with mentees while helping them reach career and personal goals. Mentees can also provide support and share knowledge and skills with their mentors. In today’s challenging and demanding healthcare environment, mentoring can help prevent burnout and lead to increased career satisfaction.

UCSF Radiology's 2021 Annual Review CME Conference to be Hosted Live Online |

Virtual continuing medical education (CME) courses provide a flexible, user-friendly way for learners with limited time to follow and comply with COVID-19 travel restrictions, keep up with CME requirements and still learn from top radiology experts. In 2021, we will host our UCSF Radiology Annual Review live online from January 11 –15, 2021. The live, interactive virtual conference will be taught by 50 UCSF Radiology faculty and will review the fundamentals of the major organ systems and corresponding imaging modalities (CT/ MR/ US/ DSA/ Mammography/Tomosynthesis/Fluoro/ X-rays).

#UCSFRadGrateful Gave Kudos to Faculty, Staff and Trainees in 2020
As 2020 drew to a close, the UC San Francisco Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging launched a gratitude campaign (#UCSFRadGrateful) posted on our social media from December 14 through 31, 2020. This campaign gave UCSF Radiology faculty, staff and trainees the opportunity to share images and captions to gave kudos and appreciation to colleagues.

Martin Rawlings-Fein, MAJS, Educational Technician Specialist at UCSF Radiology, was born and raised in the Bay Area, in and around San Jose, Santa Clara County and San Mateo County. He is also a filmmaker, parent, student of Judaism, local politico, and trans activist in his spare time! Martin joined the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging in the summer of 2013. “I will achieve 20 years of service in February,” says Martin. Pranathi Sundaram, former manager of IT Operations, spoke so highly of departmental PRIDE values, LGBTQ support, and her support of religious community that Martin could not pass the opportunity to join the team. “Pranathi really sold it, that along with Cathy Garzio’s “culture of YES”, meant I couldn’t say no.”
Educational Technology changes constantly, especially video conferencing and communications. Martin’s role in the department is to setup Zoom and share video conferencing subject matter expertise in order to provide education across many different sites and devices. “I enjoy editing videos. I like crafting the story and cleaning up the times when people don't share their full screen,” says Martin. He also provides training for items like Zoom, Teams, Office 365, maintains video conferencing equipment, and is one of our Radiology IT purchasers. COVID-19 has made Martin one of our most valuable players this year. He is now the co-host to all our radiology lectures, webinars, and events. “We went from having to be in rooms that connected to other rooms by a bridge to then be able to use Jabber and connect to the call from a laptop or desktop,” says Martin. “Then we went to Zoom which is an entirely different apparatus with many abilities that I couldn't have dreamed of when we were just starting out with video conferencing. I can't wait to see the future of video and web conferencing and what ease it will bring.”

Cynthia Hammond selected as UCSF Health Learning System Coach for 2021-2023
Cynthia Hammond, MBA, RT, ARRT, CRT, the quality and safety manager for UCSF Health Radiology, has been selected as a UCSF Health Learning System (HLS) Coach for 2021-2023. The HLS interprofessional team will be participating in an innovative program focused on developing leaders to guide transformative change in their clinical settings.
The HLS program is designed to:
- Increase the number of UCSF faculty and leaders who are fully trained in Lean and Implementation Science and how to teach it.
- Enhance the impact of residents, fellows, and leaders on UCSF True North goals.
- Increase resident, fellow, and leader competencies in quality, safety, equity, and value in inter-professional learning and teamwork.
This is a joint program administered by Drs. Lei Choi, Medical Director of Continuous Improvement and Ralph Gonzales, Associate Dean for Clinical Innovation and Chief Innovation Officer, with Drs. Bobby Baron and Kathy Julian serving to ensure alignment from the Graduate Medical Education leadership team.

Heather Nichols, Director of Process Improvement in Radiology was recently Spotlighted in the Women In Tech at UCSF Newsletter.
What technology project(s) have you worked on that you are most proud of?
Recently, we completed our second annual Referring Provider Survey. Utilizing Qualtrics, our response rate increased 12% from last year. I helped establish survey as an opportunity for our department to receive crucial feedback on what we do well in our clinical service and what can improve care for our patients and referring providers. Qualtrics has allowed my team and I greater access to surveys and data collection projects. The platform is easy to use and offers a robust menu of functions to gain meaning from the data. Good technology allows the people on the project team to efficiently gather and process useful information to shape and implement their best ideas.
How has technology helped you achieve a goal within your role or department?
This year, all of us have had to develop, implement, and maintain all manner of COVID-19 related initiatives. For a remote workforce tracking complex projects, Smartsheet has been a fantastic tool. From implementing new safety practices across our clinical sites, performing weekly safety audits and analyzing findings, to adjusting our plans as conditions change, our collaborations have been streamlined and coordinated – even semi-automated.

We as a team made Dr. Fauci as Santa holding the Covid-19 Vaccine with his hand in glove. Santa was saying: HOpe ! HOpe! HOpe!
These doors are the collective creativity of the Nuclear Medicine Staff here at Mission Bay.
On the other side of the entrance door we have Dr. Seuss. "Oh the Places You'll Go!" Below are syringes (Covid-19 vaccines) as garlands.
Below Santa are gift boxes of Pfizer and Moderna Vaccines.
On the left wall we created a Christmas Tree with all the different colors of human kind and kids holding hands and celebrating the Holidays.

Important Year-End Tax and Payroll Reminders
Due to the transition to UCPath in 2020, most UCSF employees will receive two W-2 and two 1095-C forms for the 2020 tax year.
- W-2 and 1095-C forms for earnings and benefits received before the UCPath transition will be available in At Your Service Online (AYSO).
- W-2 forms for earnings received after the UCPath transition will be available in UCPath online.
- 1095-C forms for benefits received after the UCPath transition will not be available electronically in UCPath online. All forms will be mailed.
Employees who have not signed up to receive their W-2 electronically may do so through UCPath online until January 15th. Electronic form elections are no longer available in At Your Service Online.
Employees will be notified via email when tax forms are available for secure retrieval from AYSO and UCPath online. For employees electing to receive paper copies of 2020 tax forms, all forms will be mailed no later than January 31st to the address contained in the UCPath system as of January 15th. To ensure timely receipt of tax forms, employees should verify their personal email and home address in UCPath online by January 15th.
There are additional reminders and announcements related to your pay, taxes and benefits — some that may require action. Please visit the UCnet website to review all important year-end tax information and payroll deadlines.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update
As announced by Joshua Adler, Chief Clinical Officer at UCSF Health, more details in regards to the Covid-19 Vaccine Rollout. More than 6,300 of our colleagues have been vaccinated since December 16th, and more are scheduled for thousands more.

An online dashboard that provides our community with the latest UCSF vaccination numbers.

A tool through HR Umbrella for employees and managers to find out which phase of the vaccine rollout they’ve been assigned to, and webinars to help managers change those phases when needed.
- Fully operational vaccine sites at Parnassus and Oakland, with our second San Francisco site opening next week at our Mission Bay campus. (UCSF Fresno vaccines are being handled locally in Fresno.)
- Together, these will put us on track to vaccinate about 10,000 people per week and – assuming we receive the expected vaccine shipments – to complete both doses for more than 19,000 higher-risk workers by mid-February.
- We also have begun the process to vaccinate contractors who are at risk of exposure in our clinical areas, including traveling nurses.
